Woodwinds, or woodwind instruments are the most imperative part of bands or orchestras because the warmth and high-pitched sound effects, when played with other instruments, makes music lively and vibrant.
The woodwind family consists of flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe and bassoon along with other lesser-knowns - each instrument making different sounds. Reeds made of cane are tenderly placed on the mouthpiece to produce sound in all except the flute and piccolo. These instruments should be dissembled before you put them away in their cases.
Strangely, with the development of new technology some woodwinds are made of plastic or brass, like the sax, to bring out special effects rather than only of wood.
Many musical pieces have been written especially for matching the versatility of instruments like the flute, clarinet and saxophone. These instruments are very popular and an excellent entry for playing woodwinds. Once the primary learning is over, oboe and bassoon (double reed instruments), piccolo, English horn and bass clarinet are usually added. The Native American flutes produce a distinct vibratory sound that is quite unlike the others.
The pitch produced by a woodwind instrument is relative to the size of the tube and the holes. Mostly tubes come in conical tubes or cylindrical form. The player blows through the narrowest end of the tube, the sound resonates only from the rest part of the tube down to the hole.
Then the woodwind player makes the pitch resonate by covering and uncovering the holes with their fingers on the instrument.
Fortunately, modern instruments of the woodwind family have keys for easy use. This, in particular makes them popular for children to step into the musical learning curve.
