Having Fun With The Piccolo

The piccolo is a member of the woodwind instruments family. Piccolos are very similar to flutes, except that they are much smaller and have a much higher pitch than flutes.

Many piccolos these days are made of metal or hard wood but silver ones are louder and shriller sounding than wooden versions, making them ideal for outdoor or amateur performances but bad for professional use.

Wooden piccolos have a more refined sound and are often used by expert piccoloists.

How To Sound Like A Professional Piccoloist

Practice is the key to becoming a good piccoloist. Be bold and don't be afraid to make mistakes while practicing with the instrument. In order to play like an expert piccoloist, it is sometimes best to mimic their posture so that the tones come out warm and relaxed.

Piccolos, like others in the woodwind family, are often used for fast, shimmering vibratos. Like the violin or any high-pitched instrument, a faster vibrato is sound more pleasant for them.

For this to occur, a constant stream of air is needed. In this regard, take long breaths in between instrument plays and make sure to concentrate on regulating the airflow for tempered output. Sometimes the shrill sound becomes irritating to the ears with prolonged practice so it is recommended that you buy a pair of earplugs to minimize the sound.

The headjoint is an important piece for piccolos. It directly affects the sound and responsiveness. When buying, make sure to try on different headjoints and select the best instrument.

It should also be noted that conical and cylindrical bores affect the way piccolos sound. The conical bore instrument gives off a fuller and more consistent sound, and is used more by professional piccoloists.
