Believe it or not, the trumpet was first used long ago on the battlefield. Soldiers would listen for certain calls from their trumpets so they would know what to do in battle.
Thankfully for the safety of trumpeters, this great horn is more often found being blown in orchestras than blown up on the field of battle.
In the 1600s, trumpets were up to 7 or 8 feet long and were bent simply to make the horn easier to hold. Compared to today's versions, these 17th century models were fairly simplistic.
Bach Is Back With The Trumpet
So, the original trumpets did not have valves for the trumpeter to find notes and the mouthpiece was shaped differently than ones we see today. Without valves, the trumpeter was tasked with changing notes by move his lips around on the mouthpiece. Not as easy as it sounds.
Despite the seeming awkwardness of the trumpet, great composers throughout history have created scores for that showcase the horn and trumpeters. Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and Haydn all created compelling scores that let the trumpeters take a slice of center stage.
Leonore by Beethoven, Trumpet Concerto in D Major by Mozart, and Trumpet Concerto in D Major by Haydn are some of the most well-known works.
High quality brass trumpets are still being produced and played today. Makers such as Yamaha, Barrington, and Jupiter lead the music industry in creating top-notch horns that sound out an octave above the rest when tooted by an accomplished trumpeter.

Trumpets are one of the most popular instruments that students start to play when taking a band class at school. Many people think the trumpet is very easy to play since all it seems to consist of is a mouthpiece, horn, and three valves.
Trumpets sounds simple too, don’t they? However, as anyone who has picked one up can tell you, playing it is anything but simple.
Trumpets are considered a soprano brass instrument and it has all but eclipsed its similar counterpart the cornet. The cornet’s sound is controlled whilst the trumpet is much livelier.

Many years ago, trumpets were typically used as a signal instrument. Everyone can remember the movies that show one signalling the beginning of a battle. These days however, it is considered one of the loveliest instruments in the band.
