Mr. Trombone - Blow That Horn

Believe it or not, the trombone derives from an Old English instrument called the "sackbut." Although not fitting for such a regal instrument, trombones seem to have overcome such an inauspicious first name to secure themselves as a vital part of orchestras, big bands, and jazz music.

Trombones, or just "bones" as trombonists-in-the-know call them, have been around for over 600 years.

The Italian word for "sackbut" is "trompone," so we can likely thank the Italians for our current name.

The Long And The Short Of The Trombone

There are four different kinds of trombones in use today, including the alto, bass, soprano, and tenor (although, the contemporary symphony orchestra usually only uses the tenor and bass bones).

Although the bones can play all the notes of the chromatic scale, most early compositions for trombones kept them in the lower registered. You'll find that scores for bones are often written for three trombonists at time - so the bones can belt out the harmony.

Early in the 19th century valves were added to the bones, just like other brass instruments. However, this addition was not kept and the bones are valve-free to this day.

As a member of the brass family, glissando can often be heard on the bones. Glissando is the quick move between many notes. By sliding the bone's tubing back and forth - thus making the instruments tubing longer and shorter - trombonists can change the notes they play as they blow.

A trombone has seven basic positions. By making changes to their lip positions, trombonists can make a wide variety of different sound effects.

If you've never blown a trombone, you're in for a surprise. If you can master the lip position on the bones, the rest is just pure fun. Pick up a Yamaha, Barrington, or Jupiter and get blowing on your own horn today.
