The Alto saxophone is one of the great innovations in Jazz, and considered as the lynchpin of most band stand and orchestra programs for many years.
Alto is a smaller version of the tenor saxophon...
In 1845, Belgian Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax experimented for a more homogeneous sound, his idea succeeded and he evolved, alto saxophones along with soprano, bass and contrabass.
Like all saxophones, the alto has the classic saxophone shape with essentially a long, brass tube with holes, opened and closed by metal keys having a mouthpiece with a single reed attached.
The alto makes a sound higher than the tenor and the baritone saxophones but lower than the soprano sax.
Some great breathtaking, inventive and timeless saxophone music pieces are Tales and Tools - a solopiece only for alto, The Beatles: Best Of The Beatles - EB alto, Anthony Braxton's For Alto, Classic Rock Hits Alto Sax (For Marching/Pep Band) etc.
Hodges, Benny Carter, Ornette Coleman - the first altoist to set the melody free and jolted Jazz, Rudy Vallee and Charlie Parker - developed fantastic 'bop' playing on the alto and are without question one of the finest altoists in Jazz history.
Today the alto is used primarily in jazz bands where their versatility is indispensable. Other than a reed, your alto will need a case, a strap and a music stand for your music.
Selmer, Yamaha and Armstrong are famed for their saxes in both durability and quality craftsmanship and all provide accessories for your sax and all are available online. But whichever sax you buy, you're going to have a blast
