The Saxophone, created in 1842 by the Belgian Adolphe Sax, is one of the more storied instruments of the last 200 years. Imbued with countless decades of musical lore, saxophones have achieved a near-mythic status as the instrument of choice for ambassadors of cool.

From the smoky jazz lounge to the high school band, the saxophone and its saxophonists have been much lauded for their musical styling and skills.

Most often associated with popular music, big band, and jazz music, the saxophone was originally created for the orchestra and military bands.

Saxophones Steal The Spotlight

It's no wonder that saxophones seem to garner so much attention. With their elaborate key work and often gorgeous brass finishes, the sax just exudes cool sophistication. Coming in a variety of types from the alto to the contrabass, there's a sax for just about every musician.

Taking skilled breath control to blow through this woodwind's single reed set up, accomplished saxophonists often can thrill audiences with their long-winded saxophone trilling. Add to this control, growling, glissando, and harmonics and you've got yourself a sax as the center of attention once again.

Keeping the quality of their saxophones at peak level, makers such as Yamaha, Bonneville, Gemeinhardt, and Armstrong continue to lead the market of sax makers.

With their line of accompanying products including specially-crafted cases, professional quality reeds and saxophone stands, these companies demonstrate time and time again to saxophonists that excellence does not come cheap.

With prices that can exceed many thousands of dollars, if you're interested in becoming a saxophonist, it's often best to rent before you buy. Make sure the saxophone is your instrument of choice before you blow.

Saxophones And The Great Saxophonists We Know Today

Saxophones are single-reed woodwind musical instruments made of brass with a conical bore.

The saxophone is made up of a tube with a mouthpiece at one end and a bell-shaped opening at the other with holes covered by pads moved by small levers called keys.

To play the saxophone, a saxophonist blows on a flat cane reed attached to the mouthpiece and presses the keys to open and close the holes.

The most popular saxophones are curved and straight soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone.

Going Back In Time

Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax invented this majestic instrument hence the 'saxophone' name.

Saxophones came about because of Sax' desire to invent an instrument that combined the characteristics of string, woodwind and brass instruments. This hybrid instrument is his incarnation of that vision.

Invented only in the mid-1840's, saxophones are relatively new compared to other music instruments yet the it is reputed to be the most popular amongst all wind instruments. This is in part due to the great and extremely popular saxophonists we know today such as Branford Marsalis, Clarence Clemmons, Dave Koz, and of course, Kenny G.

Kenny G. is known for playing the Soprano saxophone and is probably the most popular saxophonist of today's generation.

With albums that have actually sold millions worldwide, Kenny G. is credited to have made the soprano saxophone sound appealing to millions of people today. Famous melodies by this multi-awarded saxophonist include the tunes Songbird, Silhouette and Don't Make Me Wait for Love.
