If you've ever blown into the top of an empty soda bottle, you've taken your first toot on a flute. Granted, today's flutes are a little classier than a soda bottle, but the principle is still the same. Blow and make sound. Flutists have been doing just this for hundreds of years.
The flute evolved from an instrument called a "recorder" which was used up to 5,000 years ago. Derived from the Latin word meaning "tibia," early instruments were made of bone rather than wood. Wood had a tendency to split or break. Flutists today are likely relieved that wood and metal has long since replaced the bone of old!
The flute we know today appeared in France in the 1600s. Flutists in orchestras have been blowing on these musical treasures from the woodwinds family for every century since.
With the exception of the piccolo, the flutes are the highest pitched of all the woodwinds. Some flutists cherish the sharp pitch of the instrument, while other flutists seem to enjoy the soft and mellow sounds at the high end of its range.
The beauty of flutes is that there is just not one to choose from. Despite the common perception, flutists know that many fine examples of the variety of the instrument exist today.
Whether you choose a reed-based instrument - as you will find in your classical and orchestral varieties - or those without reeds, such as native American and pan, you will undoubtedly get a kick out of hearing a professional flutist blowing beauty from her pipe.
A number of stellar flute makers have established themselves as leaders in production of this famed woodwind. Top flutists regularly select their instruments from Yamaha, Bonneville, Gemeinhardt and Armstrong.
So, whether your taste is for an Irish jig or an American ballad, a soprano or an alto, grab your flute case, an extra set of reeds, a stand for your music, and get fluting today! Flutists everywhere will welcome another artist to their very special family.
Used flutes are a great idea if you are a budding flutist on a budget. Actually, even if you're not a flutist on a tight budget, a used modern flute is a good decision if you're not yet sure you want to be a flutist to begin with.
A silver-coated flute is a great purchase. It is very dense and not as expensive as gold or platinum coated varieties.
A used silver flute would normally cost 20 to 60 percent less than a brand new one, presenting great value for budget-conscious flutists.
A professional flute can be entirely made in costly metal and be quite expensive - but these would typically be even better investments when purchased secondhand as they are sure to last longer.
Finding a flute should not be a big challenge. Musical publications, woodwind magazines, and even online auctions are great places to find one.
After tracking down your ideal instrument, make sure to find as much information as possible about it. Get details such as the flute serial number, manufacturer, and the specifications if possible. Make sure to find one that exactly fits your needs.
Determine if it has drawn or soldered tone holes. Does the flute have a B- or C-foot joint? Does it have an offset or in-line G key? Does it have other special keys? These are just some of the things you should ask.
Lastly, observe the condition of the flute. Look for dents, scratches and other tarnishes - there should be little of it. Most importantly, you should check if the playing mechanism works right. Test it to make sure that everything works right.
Now that you know what things to look for, it's time to embark on that great flute-buying journey. Look out James Gallway a challenger is coming.
