Brass instruments have been ruling the music scene since long ago. Music instruments of brass are versatile and find favor in concert bands, orchestra, jazz bands, marching bands and almost all musical congregations. Contrary to popular opinion, not all instruments are made of brass.
The nomenclature brass instrument stems from the way it produces the sound and not by the metal from which it is made. Instruments made from wood such as a cornet comes in the brass category and conversely the instrument made from brass like a saxophone is classified as a woodwind instrument.
The players produce sound notes in these instruments by vibration of lips and blowing into a tubular resonator. Some of the beginners might refer to it as spiting.
These instruments are also known as labrosone, which means lip-vibrated instruments. Like all musical instruments the labrosones or have a large range in shapes, sizes and the mouthpieces and horns. We can classify these instruments into three categories -
Players play natural instruments notes in the instrument's harmonic series. The most popular instrument of this family is the bugle. Even the Trumpet and French horn were natural instruments in the earlier days
Valve instruments are the instruments in brass category with a set of valves. The player operates the valves with his fingers, which provide extra tubing to instrument by manipulating its overall length. Some popular brass valve instruments are the modern trumpet, cornet, saxhorn, flugelhorn, tuba, and sousaphone
Slide instruments are the instruments where the player uses a slide to manipulate the instrument's tubing. Brass Slide instruments are the trombone, sackbut and bazooka.
