Violin strings are the most important part in a violin. They directly influence performance of this instrument. The strings must "cohere" and vibrate well. Besides, they should be tough and responsive to produce good music.
The violin is a hollow wooden box. It takes many pieces of wood to make this instrument and glue holds the wooden pieces together. It usually has four strings but sometimes the violin may have five strings on the double bass.
A violin string is usually made of animal gut, nylon or steel. The strings wrap around pegs at one end of the instrument and attach to a tailpiece at the other. They stretch tightly across a bridge on the body of the instrument to produce particular pitches.
Good sound from the violin means good string tension. The bass strings must be thick enough to produce a fat sound. A tense string gives a louder sound close by, but at a distance. Higher notes need more tension. It is advisable to play tense strings nearer the fingerboard. You must move closer to the bridge of the violin when you bow with a slow speed and weight on a low-tension string. You should bow faster and lighter if you want to stay near the fingerboard. Speed, weight and point-of-contact are the three major factors that influence the performance.
The type and quality of the strings on the violin must match each other. Otherwise, there would be a mismatch in feel and performance. Make sure there is no difference in string tension and note when passing from one string to another.
Cheap violins usually come with strings of inferior quality. If you pick up a cheap Chinese antique violin, you should at least change its strings. Strings like Dominants would improve performance of your Chinese violin. You should replace the strings before they wear out and burst. They would last longer if you keep them clean.
