Double Bass - Riding High
The double bass, largest member of the violin family, is about 1.85 meters high. The height makes the bass stand out in any orchestra. However, the bass can be tiring for the bassist due to its size.
Double basses, until 1950, provided bass support in popular music but then musicians turned to electric bass.
However, the double retained its place in jazz where it is still used as the main bass instrument.
A Tough Life For A Double Bass
The bass traces its ancestry to the double-bass viol that first made its appearance in the 16th century. The double-bass violin that followed it in the 18th century was quickly phased out because it was too unwieldy and lacked tonal quality.
Early basses had four or five strings though their number came down to three in the 18th and 19th centuries. The modern-day basses have gone back to four though a fifth string may be added in some basses.
The style of bows for the bass has also changed with Bass players changing from holding the bow with the stick out-curved to the in-curved bow models of today's bassist.
Leading names with the bass are: Domenico Dragonetti, Charles Mingus, who doubles up as jazz player and composer, and Serge Koussevitzky, the Russian-American conductor.
Composers like John Downy, Raymond Luedeke, and Robin Holloway writing new concertos for the bass help generate fresh interest in the bass and we will always have a soft spot for the bassist plucking away in jazz bands.
