Stringed instruments have been strummed, plucked, and bowed for many years and the violin is no exception. Violins and violas were first played by violinists in Italy in the 1500s and have been seeing action ever since.
Evolving from earlier bowed instruments, the violin has only 4 strings. But, what it lacks in string power it makes up for in parts.
For such a small instrument, the violin has a peg box, tuning pegs, neck, fingerboard, bridge, chin rest, tailpiece, belly, bass bar, soundpost, sound holes, and a back. Whoosh! How do violinists manage it all?.
The Stradivarius violin is probably the best known make of instrument in the world. Antonio Stradivari produced over 1100 instruments but only 650 are known to exist today. Time to get looking in the cellar.
Violins have their own distinct sound, but critics say that the Stradivarius is in a class of its own. These are extremely expensive and will cost well over $10,000 US. Definitely not for the beginner!
Violins are surely the most beautiful instruments in the world and emit an enchanting sound. Even the body of a violin is stunning. Several different stringed instruments make up the family including the viola and the fiddle.
Violins typically have four strings and can cover three octaves, although many can cover more. Its history is somewhat convoluted and there were many precursors to the version we know now.
Antique violins are a hot commodity in many musical circles and can be very expensive. Age and condition certainly drives up prices.
When buying violins you should be aware of the necessary accessories. It is important to get a bow that you are comfortable with and the store may be able to recommend one for you.
A violin case to keep it safe is essential and you will need a music stand to keep sheet music in easy view.
Violins are truly beautiful instruments and a pleasure for all the senses.
Accomplished violinists have graced orchestras around the world for centuries. The violin is actually largely responsible for keeping the main melody of most orchestral pieces. With their bows poised at the read, these talented violinists take music to another level of beauty as their strings sing out loud.
In the 1600s, a small town in Italy began making violins that are still celebrated today by violinists as the best ever created.
In Cremona, three instrument-making families, the Amatis, the Guarneris, and the Stradivaris, created the most appealing instruments in history and are still loved by violinists to this day.
Antonio Stradivari is the most celebrated of all violin makers. His now-antique instruments, as well as those created by Guarneri, are worth millions of dollars and are cherished by violinists of all abilities. Perhaps the most expensive of all is Le Messie, a Stradivarius kept in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University which is estimated to be worth $20 million!
If a violin is in your future or if you are already a budding violinist, be sure to keep practicing, keep your strings tight and bows clean, and maybe someday, you'll be lucky enough to be one of those special violinists who get to dance with a Stradivarius.
