Finding The Viola Of Your Dreams
The viola is a middle-range string instrument that resembles the alto part in a choir. Just like violins, violas are played on the shoulder with a bow.
If you want to become an accomplished violist, then you have to buy a viola.
Luckily, the concept that the more expensive the instrument, the better it is does not apply to violas.
Many violists who own top brand instruments complain that the viola sounds awful.
Track Down the Right Viola - Attention all Violists
That's because most are made of wood, which, if not properly crafted or cared for, can shrink, expand or easily deteriorate overtime, affecting the strings. Moreover, different types of wood vibrate… well, differently.
So choosing violas based on composition and construction is of the essence. When making a purchase, always make sure that you are allowed to try it first.
Interestingly, there is no standard size for violas, although the most common types seem to be 16 ˝ inches. However, this size can be inadequate in terms of range of sound - so there are sizes up to 21 inches. The problem with the larger size is that it is sometimes too large to play and violists complain about physical difficulties.
Contemporary viola manufacturers are entertaining the possibility of redesigning the shape to improve playability. All efforts focus on trying to improve the air mass inside the instrument and increase sound. For common playing tasks, however, a typical 16˝-inch will suffice.
Lastly, flat arching violas are better than high arching, as these tend to be more powerful. High arching tends to produce a deep somewhat nasal sound.
Remember, if you're new to this instrument, try and take a violist with you to ensure you find the viola of your dreams.
