The cello, made most popular in the 20th century by the cellist Yo-Yo Ma, has been a star of string quartets and orchestras since the late 1600s.
First created in Italy in the early 1500s, cellos - seen initially as the 3-stringed "violincello" - played the role of bass by cellists in early string quartets.
In the 1700s and 1800s, the cello began to see more air time in symphony orchestras and in chamber music. In addition, it was not uncommon to hear cellists releasing the deep resonating notes of the instrument in bass section of church choirs.
Weighing in at 22 pounds, the cello is the second largest of the string section (the bass is the biggest). As cellists know, it is the tenor, or baritone, of the string family. The notes often sound like a human voice and composers have composed accordingly (e.g., Strauss' Don Quixote).
Cello notes have a deep, warm tone. Cellists pull the music from the instrument either with a bow or through plucking, known as pizzicato. The thick and long strings of the cello drop it down an entire octave lower than the viola. Now, that's deep.
Standing at 4 feet tall and 1-1/2 feet across, the cello is a big instrument for the cellist to handle. But, that hasn't stopped some of the most celebrated cellists throughout history.
Some famous compositions for cellists include, William Tell Overture by Tchaikovsky, Cello Concerto in B minor by Antonin Dvorak, and Sonata for Cello and Piano by Claude Debussy.
In addition to Yo-Yo Ma, other well-known cellists include Mstislav Rostropovich, Lynn Harrell, Janos Starker, and Julian Lloyd-Webber.
With practice, dedication, and - of course - a cello of your own, you could begin making your mark on the musical scene starting soon. Don't delay, sling that bow and pick those strings as you make your way toward becoming a virtuoso cellist today.
