Still A Global Player
A truly portable free-reed wind musical phenomenon, accordions have dynamic sensitivity, eloquent response, acoustic flexibility, and compatibility of sound with string and wind instruments. Accordionists admire to play any style of the existing musical literature on accordion as an ensemble instrument.
Friedrich Buschmann introduced the first basic accordion in 1822 in Germany without much fuss.
However, Cyrillus Damian shaped the accordion to its present form and even patented it as his discovery.
Single-action accordions are still played by accordionists but with slight variations in most countires.
In fact, there are Cajun accordions, Tyrolean Alpine or Sterische Harmonica (3-5 row diatonic), melodeons or Irish, one-row diatonic, piano, concertinas, Bayan or chromatic and Vienna or Italian style diatonic.
The most popular form is the piano accordion developed in Europe in the late 1800's and popularized by Count Guido Deiro. Deiro, the first famous piano accordionist performed in Vaudeville and made the first radio broadcast of an accordion in 1921.
At first, there were very small accordions manufactured with a single row of ten buttons, each controlling a valve containing a pair of metal reeds pronged to a diatonic scale just like a harmonica. Now you can find even MIDI and electronic with pioneering features.
Leading accordions manufacturers are Serenellini, Delicia, Pancordion, Hohner and Gabbanelli. They all offer stands, cases and other accessories and tend to be found at sites of more traditional instrument suppliers like violins and flutes.
Today, it is the Italians who have fallen deeply in love with accordions and 75% of are actually manufactured in Italy before being exported world-wide.
A used accordion may not be in as good a condition as a brand new one, but not all budding accordionists have the money to buy brand new ones.
Further, second hand accordions do not necessarily mean they are in bad condition. It's just that they are a bit of a sensitive lot so you need to take a lot of things into consideration when buying one second-hand.
People sell their accordion for various reasons and not always because they don't work well.
If you can avoid it try not to buy used accordions from the Internet. This is because you would want to properly inspect the instrument first before purchasing it. At the very least, ask to meet the seller to inspect it.
This may sound weird but do sniff the accordion you are considering to buy. No joke. Smell the case and the item itself because a musty smelling case or bellows means that the accordionist did not store it properly. It is highly possible that there may be moulds that have already caused damage to the wood and leathers, and that the reeds may already be rusted.
Further, when testing an accordion listen for rattling sounds. This could be a sign of a broken reed.
Beware too of out-of-tune accordions. This can mean anywhere from a simple tuning to a full-blown cleaning and repair job. And don't buy one that has been exposed to humid climates because it will probably have rusty reeds.
Lastly, note that the best accordion is actually the one that's been well used by the accordionist who owned it. Ones that have not been used well may have been stuck in the attic for ages.
