The Acoustic Guitar Keeps It Au Naturel
With names like Huddie Leadbetter (a.k.a. Leadbelly), Pete Seeger, and Leo Kottke, the acoustic guitar quickly rose to fame in the 20th century. Derived from the classical guitar, acoustic guitars are usually strung with steel strings, rather than nylon.
The steel strings ring in a brighter, louder sound to the guitar. To be able to handle the pull of the steel strings, these guitars are constructed with a much more durable composition than classical guitars.
Guitarists usually play their acoustics with guitar picks, called plectrums and typically made of hard plastic.
Acoustic Guitars Are Finger-Picking Good
When not using picks, many guitarists use their bare fingers and fingernails to strum and strike individual notes. This technique is called guitar fingerpicking and is common in folk guitar music.
Most acoustics come with 6 strings. However, a standard variation is the 12-string guitar, which sounds out with double the musical firepower.
