Drum sticks are more important than you'd think. It is not enough to just choose a good drum set. A good pair of sticks is one that has the same weight and density and is pitch-matched.
The drum stick has traditionally been made from three kinds of woods, Hickory, Maple and Japanese oak.
The Hickory sticks absorb the impact well and are quite durable. The Maple sticks are light but are less durable and the Japanese oak sticks are heavy but durable.
Today, drum manufacturers are also offering synthetic sticks. These drumming sticks may be expensive but they carry some advantages in terms of density, look and feel.
Drummers generally prefer wooden sticks, though the wood density may differ from log to log. Thus, a Hickory stick may feel lighter and hollow while a comparative Maple stick may feel more comfortable.
Professional drummers use several parameters while selecting a stick. Long sticks can provide greater leverage and reach but less control. In contrast, heavier sticks are easier to control but produce a stronger tone and a louder volume and add to strength and endurance especially if the drummer plays for long hours.
It is essential that the sticks are straight, and not warped. The best way to check warping is to roll the stick on a flat surface, and discard the ones that wobble.
Tips on the stick also play an important role. Small round tips create tightly focused tones, large round tips produce fuller body drum tones, barrel tips create medium body tones while pointed tips produce focused medium tones. The nylon tips are more durable.
Most drum manufacturers like Ludwig, Yamaha, Tama, Pearl, Fiber, provide sticks as part of the drum kits. The choice is yours.
