Cymbals are played mostly in the orchestra to create a wide range of loud, crashing sound effects. The word cymbal is derived from the Greek word 'kymbos', meaning "vessel" or "bowl".
As with most instruments, cymbals come in different sizes, from tiny finger sized with a gentle ding to garbage tin-cover sized with booming crash for orchestras.
Coming from the percussion family, cymbals are perhaps the only untuned musical instruments that are played by being struck, scraped or shaken together.
Cymbals are an essential element of a drum set normally using both high-hat and single. These can be hit with drum sticks or brushes, depending on the degree of sound required.
A heavier cymbal with hit with sticks may be perfect for a rock drummer where a jazz band or combo may prefer a thinner lighter one and brushes.
Some of the prominent categories of cymbals are:
I bet you never knew there was so much to know about the simple cymbal.
A cymbal is an ancient musical instrument and finds its place in nearly all kinds of music. It draws its name from the Greek word 'kymbos' which means 'vessel' or 'bowl', suggesting a link with bronze drinking vessels used in old times. Percussionists also call it a 'plate'.
There are many manufacturers of cymbals with some of the leading ones being Sabian, Zildjian and Paiste.
Before playing remove any padding or protective cover from the instrument. These reduce the effect of the sound.
Hold the instrument in your weaker hand. Place each finger under the strap close to the percussion instrument. Hold it at an angle of 45 degrees and position the other instrument away from the first, at a more vertical angle. You can now try to create different sound effects such as sizzle, crashing and roll.
There are many ways of playing this percussion instrument and therefore the sound that results from it is unique each time. It allows greater imagination and creativity of the performer. Thus when composing, the general sounds of the instrument need to be kept in mind. Then select the correct sounds, which would be proper to the particular emotion or structure of the music.
When playing in an orchestra you must keep the following points in mind. First, ensure that your part fits with the music, therefore, prepare for your performance through proper research and analysis, select the right instruments, think about what you plan to play and practice. Second, when playing, listen to the music, feel it and then express it. You will then be a part of the orchestra.
