Orange Crush 10
Review of the Orange Crush 10 by The Man in the Jar
The Orange Crush 10 is basically a 10 watt practise amp that drives a 6 inch speaker. As with all things Orange it is built in an extremely robust fashion and is, well, orange. The famous Orange badge sits prominently on the straw-coloured grille cloth and the black corner protectors an carrying handle provide an attractive contrast.
The control panel is recessed on the top for protection. There's a single guitar input jack on the extreme right of the control panel (not to be confused with the headphone socket at the extreme left). Next along is the overdrive section with two Gain controls and a Master volume. To the left of these is the EQ section with a Low, Mid and a High control.
The back of the cabinet houses the AC power inlet and the on/off rocker switch. The cabinet is closed but the speaker can be accessed by removing the four screws that secure the lower back panel.
Sounds of the Orange Crush 10
The Orange delivers a nice crunchy sound considering it's working with quite a small speaker. It takes a while to fathom the way the volume controls interact, but eventually I got a nice toneful clean sound with the Gain 1 at 9 o'clock and Gain 2 at 3 o'clock, adjusting the Master to get the required volume. Advancing Gain 1 then progressively adds on more overdrive for more and more aggressive rock sounds. The EQ's are not spectacularly wide ranging but they are good enough to tweak the sound in a general way, but as the sound is delivered via a 6 inch speaker there is a limit to what they can do.
Overall impressions of the Orange Crush 10
Practise amps have been getting steadily better over the years but have always been victims of the law of diminishing returns - when does an expensive practise amp become an entry level gigging combo? But here, with their formidable reputation at stake, Orange have turned in a great little amp that will take you from basic clean sounds to quite mad overdrive and all points in between.
Buy the Orange Crush 10
Note: As with all amps equipped with headphone sockets, turn the Master Volume to zero before plugging in the 'phones.
