Squier Affinity Hello Kitty Stratocaster
Review of the Squier Affinity Hello Kitty by The Man in the Jar
OK, it's a girl's guitar but it is still a guitar and it does still have Fender on the headstock, albeit in small writing.
Features of the Squier Affinity Hello Kitty
Tuners - Sealed unbranded mini-tuners which work really well.
Headstock - Classic 60's-style Stratocaster six-on-one-side.
Nut - White plastic nut is a set-in-slot type which is tidily finished.
Neck - Maple C-profile bolt-on neck with satin finish and rosewood skunk stripe. This is actually a very comfortable and playable neck.
Fretboard - The maple fingerboard is smooth and well-finished. The position markers are a lovely vibrant pink.
Frets - Medium-thin frets are well-polished for easy string-bending.
Action - This particular guitar had a good factory set-up and the action was superb.
Body - Standard Stratocaster shape in agathis with the usual comfort contouring. The Hello Kitty logo is emblazoned on the back.
Bridge - Standard oblong plate bridge with saddles adjustable for height and intonation. Surprisingly for the price of this guitar it features through-body stringing.
Pickups - Single stock humbucker in white.
Controls - Single volume control.
Pickguard - Cleverly-shaped as the face of Kitty herself.
Strap-buttons - Small strap buttons in the usual places.
Output Jack - On the lower edge in an oval chrome plate.
Finish - Really good for a guitar in this price bracket.
Sound of the Squier Affinity Hello Kitty Stratocaster
The stock humbucker delivers a decent basic rock sound that can be used to drive a pod or digital amp to good effect. Obviously the basic nature of the electrics means that any tweaking of tone has to be done amp-side.
Overall Impressions of the Squier Hello Kitty
This is an eminently playable guitar and for a beginner the quality of the neck and fretboard will be a positive boon through the all-important first few months of learning. As your young beginner progresses the guitar could easily take a pickup upgrade and serve her well through many years of playing alone or in a band. If you have a female relation who wants a guitar then the Hello Kitty represents an excellent quality entry-level guitar offering real value for your money. And it looks cool too!
