PRS SE One
Review of the PRS SE One by The Man in the Jar
Billie Joe, what have you started?!
Features of the PRS SE One
Tuners - PRS branded mini-tuners with large knobs work well.
Headstock - The slashed minimalism of the PRS headstock is fast becoming a guitar design classic. Both headstock and neck have the same vintage cherry finish as the body.
Nut - The black plastic nut abuts the fretboard and is accurately cut and finished.
Neck - The mahogany set neck has just a hint of chunkiness that nods towards the Gibson that it seeks to emulate, but it's still slim enough to feel fast and lithe. This is a perfectly balanced neck.
Fretboard - The dark rosewood fretboard has a light stripy grain running through it. The dot markers are made from abalone and pearloid with the pearloid part forming a crescent moon effect.
Frets - The fat and chunky frets are very well polished and create an authentic playing experience.
Action - Really good from the box, this guitar has been well set-up.
Body - There can be no doubts that the SE One is a Gibson Les Paul Junior look-a-like, yet there is a lot about the mahogany body that retains pure PRS style; the subtle comfort contouring on the front and back, the scalloped lower horn and the slightly fat-bottomed shape. On a leather strap this guitar balances perfectly so you stop noticing its healthy weight. The Vintage Cherry finish is really beautiful.
Bridge - This is a combined fixed bridge and stop-tail design. The strings feed through holes in the front of the bridge (closest the pickup) and immediately wrap over to cross a fixed blade saddle. The saddle is diagonally offset to provide some compensation for better intonation. The action (string height) can be adjusted by means of two large screws, one either end of the bridge assembly. But interestingly PRS include a small leaflet advising purchaser's to check truss rod adjustment before adjusting the action.
Pickups - One rather sexy soapbar single-coil sits in its black plastic housing.
Controls - One volume control. Move along, nothing more to see...
Scratchplate - Simple stylised teardrop in three-ply black/white/black.
Strap-buttons - Two generous strap-buttons, one on the base of the body and one on the edge of the upper bout.
Output Jack - In the lower edge of the body set in a chrome oval plate.
Finish - Finish is excellent. Korean-made, say no more!
Accessories - A very plush branded gigbag.
Sound of the PRS SE One
If you don't know what a Gibson Les Paul Junior sounds like, you deserve to be sent to bed without any tea. The Junior is famed for being brash and punkish but with good tonal depth of character. The PRS emulates this to perfection. The brash brightness of the soapbar lets rip and the all-mahogany construction ensures a solid foundation to the sound. Absolutely spine-tingling!
Overall Impressions of the PRS SE One
When you're a one trick pony you have to make sure the trick is a very, very good one. This guitar does what it does at least as well as a "proper" Junior. It has one of the most instantly likeable voices in rock and just oozes class. Back this up with PRS design elements and the Korean quality manufacture and you've got an extraordinarily desirable guitar.
