Gibson Vegas Standard

Review of the Gibson Vegas Standard by The Man in the Jar

First visual impressions remind me of the ill-starred Fender Starcaster of yesteryear, but just picking this guitar up gives you a sense of its superior quality.

Gibson Vegas Standard

Features of the Gibson Vegas Standard

Tuners - Tiny Grover sealed machines with circular pearloid knobs. The circular knobs are a bit disconcerting to use at first but the tuners work beautifully.

Headstock - This six-on-one-side Firebird variant simply breathes Gibson class, although it slightly let down by the flimsy-looking trussrod cover.

Nut - The white plastic nut abuts the fretboard and is immaculately cut.

Neck - This neck is a true revelation. Slim in depth with a nice width across the fretboard, the mahogany neck is a sublime joy to play.

Fretboard - The dark rosewood fretboard has no discernable grain. Fret markers are split diamond shapes in mother of pearl. The binding is white.

Frets - Large square profile frets are well-polished making for easy string bending and finger vibrato. The white binding on the fretboard smoothly finishes the fret ends.

Action - Superbly low and fast right out of the case.

Body - The mahogany semi-hollow body is topped with a flat maple top. The body shape is a 335 variant without any carving or contouring. The front is bound in white and the f-holes are cut in diamond slashes.

Bridge - Classic Gibson Tune-o-matic and stoptail.

Pickups - Gibson '57 Classics with chrome covers.

Controls - One master volume and one master tone.

Strap-buttons - Two vintage-style buttons in the usual places.

Output Jack - On the lower edge in a square chrome plate.

Finish - The translucent wine red finish shows off the grain of the maple top beautifully.

Accessories - Great quality Gibson hard case.

Sound of the Gibson Vegas Standard

The Gibson '57 pickups deliver everything you would expect. Through a clean amp the bridge pickup is bright and poppy while the neck pickup has a great bluesy bottom end. Combine the two and roll back the tone for sublime jazz tones. But crunch up the amp and the Vegas delivers excellent classic rock tones in spades.

Overall Impressions of the Gibson Vegas Standard

This is a super quality guitar that will beguile you as soon as you lay your hands on it. It's leaner and meaner than a 335 and is surprisingly light on the strap. It's a real contender for modern guitar bands looking for a professional quality instrument with the semi-acoustic vibe but a distinctive look.
