ESP LTD F-50 Electric Guitar
Review of the ESP LTD F-50 by The Man in the Jar
Features of the ESP LTD F-50 Guitar
Tuners - ESP branded mini-tuners in black, smooth and accurate.
Headstock - A pointy design with off-set three-a-side arrangement. Balances nicely with the overall design of the guitar.
Nut - Black plastic nut with well finely finished string slots.
Neck - Maple neck with slim, smooth and fast playing action. Excellent access to all 24 frets made even more comfortable by the beautifully rounded heel (where the neck joins the body).
Fretboard - Nicely grained rosewood fretboard with traditional dot markers except for the 12th fret where the model number, F-50, sits in an abalone inlay.
Frets - Medium jumbo frets sit quite high from the fretboard facilitating easy single or multiple string bends.
Action - Moderate action from the box with scope to go lower, but perfectly playable as it stands.
Body - This looks like a hybrid Stratocaster that might have been designed by the gorgeous Morticia. It has just enough spikiness to look mean while retaining just enough curviness to stay pretty. The deep lower cutaway is accentuated by some scalloping and that well-rounded heel is a joy to caress.
Bridge - Les Paul type bridge with individual intonation adjustment for each saddle. Action is adjusted by moving the whole bridge up and down using the screw at each end of the bridge. There's no tailpiece, instead the strings dive through the body and are anchored in ferrules at the rear.
Pickups - Two ESP LH-100 open-coil pickups give this guitar a classic aggressive look.
Controls - One volume, one tone and a three-way pickup selector. The knobs are black "mini-telecaster" type which add to the workman-like feel.
Pickguard - None fitted.
Strap-buttons - Large and very safe.
Output Jack - On lower edge situated in a scalloped recess.
Finish - The black finish on the model I tried was immaculate.
Sound of the ESP LTD F-50 Guitar
This is a double-humbucker machine with heavy rock and heavy metal in its cold, black heart. The power and sweetness of the humbuckers delivered modern metal sounds with style when running flat out. Rein them back a bit and you can easily squeeze out less aggressive "classic" rock tones.
Overall Impressions of the ESP LTD F-50 Guitar
The Gothic Metal looks and the take-no-prisoners double-humbucker format mean that every rocker looking for a new axe should consider the F-50. The twenty-four fret neck means that all the rock music ever played is there to be found on the fretboard. Shred-meisters will love the easy upper fret access and that lovely rounded heel.
