Encore P29 Electric Guitar

Review of the Encore P29 by The Man in the Jar

This is certainly a surprisingly good-looking guitar for well under one hundred quid!

Encore P29 Electric Guitar

Features of the Encore P29

Tuners - Covered types, not sealed, in chrome. Smooth and positive action.

Headstock - Standard paddle-style three-a-side with the Encore logo in pearloid.

Nut - The antiqued plastic nut abuts the rosewood fretboard and is clean and tidy.

Neck - The bolt-on maple neck is a good Les Paul clone in its ever-so-slightly chunky dimensions. The parallel profile adds a touch of authenticity as well. The black gloss finish continues up the back of the neck to give a smooth playing experience.

Fretboard - You'll find that the medium dark rosewood fretboard has a rather dry feel under the fingertips when new. This type of fretboard will "play-in" over time as it absorbs oils from your skin. This process can be speeded with specially prepared lemon-oil that is available from instrument shops. Fretmarkers are white pearloid dots.

Frets - Medium-rounded profile.

Action - Nicely playable from the box, suitable for a beginner to simply plug in and play.

Body - Normally at this price you'd expect a basic, flat slab body. But Encore have managed to incorporate an nice element of carving to the top. This carving adds a lot to the Les Paul vibe and consequently makes the P29 look more expensive that it is.

Body detail

Bridge - Tune-o-matic and separate stoptail. Each individual saddle is adjustable for intonation and the height of the strings is adjustable via a screw at each end of the bridge.

Pickups - Two open-coil antique-white humbuckers sit in antique-white surrounds. This set-up certainly looks the business.

Controls - Volume and tone for each pickup with gold top-hat knobs. A three-way pickup selector lives on the top bout.

Pickguard - Classic floating type in antique white, looks very handsome against the black finish.

Strap-buttons - Quite small strap buttons are situated on the edge of the top bout and the bottom edge of the body.

Output Jack - On the bottom edge in a rectangular plate.

Finish - Some small cosmetic flaws in the finish, but at this price it would be churlish to complain.

Sound of the Encore P29

Given the price of this guitar the basic rock sound that it delivers is really rather good. There's enough power to overdrive your amp and after a judicious tweaking of the amp's tone knobs the guitar produced a good all-round sound for rock and metal styles of play.

Overall Impressions of the Encore P29

I can't remember seeing a sub-£100 guitar that looks quite this sexy. The visuals are spot-on and the slight arch to the top of the body really seals the deal. The playability is well up to the standard of some more expensive LP clones and for this reason the Encore gets my recommendation as a super first guitar for absolute beginners. At the price there is really no excuse not to buy one for the budding electric guitarist in your family.
