Dean Dimebag Darrell Razorback Shards
Review of the Dean Dimebag Darrell Razorback Shards by The Man in the Jar
Whoa! Spiky!
Features of the Dimebag Razorback
Tuners - Sealed Grovers in a gunmetal finish with small knobs. Worked well, but always remember to unlock the nut before you touch the tuners.
Headstock - Dean's exaggerated reverse V headstock is a bit of a love it or hate it design. Either way its physical size makes it more prone to knocks and dings in confined spaces, so be careful. The front of the headstock carries the same bone-shard graphic as the body together with Dean and Dime logos.
Nut - The nut has three locking blocks, standard and essential for a guitar equipped with a Floyd Rose licensed vibrato.
Neck - The mahogany set neck has a little flavour of Les Paul about it but with slightly slimmer dimensions and a subtle V profile which sits snugly in the palm of your hand. The width profile is parallel up to the heel which I think always feels more natural. Playability is enhanced by the gloss black lacquer finish.
Fretboard - The rosewood fingerboard has quite a pronounced grain and the position markers take the form of inverted V's to match the headstock. The 12th fret is marked by an inlaid razorblade design.
Frets - Large rounded profile frets are well polished and make for easy bending and finger vibrato.
Action - Extraordinarily low from the box. This guitar has had a very good setup considering its Chinese origin.
Body - The mahogany body is a thing of rare spikiness. In essence it is a cross between a Flying V and an Explorer and despite its aggressive design this guitar is extremely comfortable to play in both sitting and standing positions. There's a cosmetic contour that extends all the way front and back edge, other than that it's a flat slab. What really marks this guitar out from the crowd is the bone-shard graphic that covers the entire front.
Bridge - This is a standard Floyd Rose Licensed tremolo (vibrato). For a fuller description please visit our Floyd Rose setup page. This particular guitar was delivered with a perfectly balanced setup - a rarity indeed.
Pickups - The bridge position is occupied by a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker with blade pole pieces. This is complimented at the neck position by a standard Dean open-coil humbucker at the neck.
Controls - Each pickup has an individual Volume control and there's a Master Tone. The Volume knobs have special raised grips to increase traction and sensitivity on a sweaty stage. The three-way pickup selector sits on the lower horn.
Strap-buttons - There are two large strap buttons, one on the back at the heel, one on the lower edge of the upper V.
Output Jack - On the front of the lower V set in a heavy-duty circular gunmetal plate.
Finish - Really good throughout.
Accessories - An excellent hardshell Dean case especially fitted for this particular model.
Sound of the Dimebag Razorback
I played this beast clean to suss out the voice of the pickups. Both had a lovely bright clarity to them, the neck pickup even rose to the challenge of a few jazz chordings. So when I jammed the overdrive up the resulting sound fed from the darkness of the mahogany structure without getting overwhelmed. All the time, no matter how heavy I pushed it, there was always an edge of crystal cutting through the sound.
Overall Impressions of the Dimebag Razorback
You're going to need to like the look of this guitar and its association as a signature instrument before you decide to buy it, and you need to be a fairly accomplished player to get on with a Floyd Rose. But if you can tick those boxes you'll have an extraordinarily comfortable and playable guitar with a great integrity of tone, especially in the eponymous Dimebucker.
