Crafter TC 035 Electro Acoustic
Review of the Crafter TC 035 Electro Acoustic by The Man in the Jar
Features of the Crafter TC 035 Electro Acoustic
Tuners - Crafter-branded mini-tuners worked smoothly and accurately.
Headstock - An attractive pinched-waist affair with a rounded gable top. It bears the Crafter name and a nice decorative flourish inlaid in pearloid.
Nut - The white plastic nut abuts the fretboard and is is tidily finished.
Neck - The slim neck is made from what looks like mahogany with a nice mocha chocolate colouring. This is a very pleasing neck to hold and play and has an air of quality that belies the relatively low price of the instrument.
Fretboard - The rosewood fretboard has a nice close grain and is bound in white plastic. The fret markers are intriguing - the first fret carries a large six-sided snowflake design, the third fret has two indented diamond markers, the fifth fret has a four-sided snowflake flanked by two indented squares, the seventh fret carries two indented diamonds like the third fret, the ninth fret has a large indented square flanked by two smaller indented squares, the twelfth fret has a small indented square flanked by two narrow eye shapes, the fifteenth fret has a single narrow eye shape, a pattern repeated on the seventeenth fret.
Frets - The narrow rounded profile frets are well polished.
Action - Decent action from the box. Crafter supply a spare saddle so you can experiment with bringing it down a bit.
Body - The smaller-than-dreadnought body has a single cutaway. The back and sides are made of rosewood that has a smokey-brown stripey grain. The top is solid spruce with a typical close-grained blondness. The front and back are bound with white pinstripe and there's a line of faux marquetry down the centre of the back. The top is edged with a line of abalone and the soundhole is decorated with a ring of beautiful rainbow abalone normally reserved for guitars in much higher price brackets.
Bridge - The rosewood bridge supports a plastic saddle that is compensated at the second string. The strings are secured by traditional bridge-pins.
Pickups - An L R Baggs Piezo sits under the bridge.
Controls - The control panel sits on the top edge, just forward of the waist, and has an integral battery compartment. There are two small pushbuttons, one to turn the onboard chromatic tuner on and off and one to reverse the phase to defeat feedback. The volume is handled by a small rotary knob and there are four sliders to Bass, Middle, Treble and Scoop.
Scratchplate - Single ply tortoiseshell teardrop.
Strap-buttons - The single strap button on the base of the body doubles as the output jack.
Output Jack - Integral to strap button.
Finish - Really good throughout.
Accessories - Spare saddle and spare bridge-pin.
Sound of the Crafter TC 035 Electro Acoustic
Acoustically the Crafter has a well-balanced standard "country" acoustic voice that just seems to get louder when amplified with flat eq. I preferred adding a bit of "edge" by slightly boosting the Bass and Treble and slightly cutting the Middle. Adjusting the dynamics of that setting using the Scoop produced a unique and fulfilling amplified voice.
Overall Impressions of the Crafter TC 035 Electro Acoustic
I don't think I've seen such a lavishly decorated guitar in this price bracket. For less than two hundred quid the Crafter offers a distinctive look, excellent playability and a voice that can be moulded from its standard country roots into something a touch more ambitious with great effect.
