Cort Action Bass

Review of the Cort Action Bass by The Man in the Jar

Cort Action Bass

Features of the Cort Action Bass

Tuners - Unbranded sealed tuners with large black "wing-nut" knobs. These work really well and their use is made easy by slight backward slant towards the player.

Headstock - Very compact two-a-side design with a little scalpel nick in the top. The truss rod cover is in black plastic which blends well with the black headstock face.

Nut - The black plastic nut abuts the fretboard and is tidily finished.

Neck - The bolt-on maple neck has a nice slim depth and a satisfying width which combine to make an easy and enjoyable playing experience. Fret access is good and the balance of the instrument on the strap emphasised the ease of playability.

Fretboard - The medium-dark rosewood fretboard has 24 frets. Although the Cort Action has a traditional complement of dot markers these are placed towards the top edge of the fretboard with both the 12th and the 24th being double-dotted.

Frets - The medium profile frets reward accurate fingering.

Action - Good from the box - the whole neck was perfectly playable with comfort.

Body - The agathis body has a kind of extended Jazz Bass feel about it. It's really well balanced and comfortable to wear on the strap. The great advantage of the extended-horn body design is the way it pulls the neck closer to the player so the low notes are not such a reach. The body features classic comfort contouring and a choice of solid colour finishes.

Bridge - Bog-standard rectangular plate bridge with integral stop-tail all in chrome. Each string has a slotted barrel saddle which is fully adjustable for string height and intonation.

Pickups - The Cort Action packs a duo of Mighty-Mite single-coil pickups. The pickup closest to the bridge is a Fender-Jazz-Style and the central split-coil is a Fender-Precision-Style. Well that seems to cover all the basses!

Controls - There's a volume control for each pickup and a single tone control. All these sport Telecaster-style knurled chrome knobs.

Strap-buttons - Two medium-sized strap buttons, one on the base of the body and one on the extended upper horn.

Output Jack - On the lower edge of the body.

Finish - Very good, Indonesian-made.

Sound of the Cort Action Bass

The joy of the Cort Action Bass is the combination of two classic pick up styles combined with the ability to combine the two in near-infinite degrees. The Jazz pickup run alone has a lovely lean and rangy tone that will cut through the mix in the higher register without sacrificing all the low-end punch. The Precision pickup has a far woodier growl to it and packs a serious punch in the lower register, this is the voice I'd choose as my standard sound. But mix the two and the depth and variety of tones available means you can pretty much fill any live or recording brief with just this one axe.

Overall Impressions of the Cort Action Bass

This is a very impressive instrument for the asking price. Mighty Mite do their long reputation no harm with these punchy single-coil lovelies, I'm particularly impressed with the Precision noise this instrument delivers. Playability is fantastic, I dropped into the groove within seconds of picking up the Action Bass and the quality of the playing experience belies the way-below-£200 price tag. For a beginner or an intermediate this is a quality steal. As a back-up bass it's a trouper and for home recording it's an inexpensive solution. I'm very impressed.
