BC Rich Body Art Junior V "Umethar" Guitar
BC Rich Body Art Junior V "Umethar" Guitar reviewed by The Man in the Jar
Features of the BC Rich Body Art Junior V "Umethar" Guitar
Tuners - Sealed BC Rich branded tuners which are smooth and work well
Headstock - An outlandish design that wouldn't look out of place on the top of a Wizard's staff. BC Rich call it the "Widow" and it looks like the pincers of a particularly nasty creepy-crawlie. But is suits the vibe of the guitar perfectly. It's black on the front with maple back and sides. The truss rod cover carries the model number JR-V.
Nut - Black plastic, nicely finished.
Neck - Maple finish with a lovely slim profile. It's fast and easy to play with great access to all 24 frets.
Fretboard - Attractive light rosewood with inlay markers that are diamond in shape.
Frets - Medium and well polished. These are excellent for accurate string bends and pre-bends.
Action - Low, fast and very satisfying straight from the box. In fact the playability of this neck is perfect for the style of music for which it was designed.
Body - A lovely skinny maple V which sits very comfortably on the strap. The V body gives unparalleled access to the strings and the more you play this type of body the more you realise how liberating it is. However it's difficult to find a good seated playing position, so expect to wear the strap at all times.
The artwork on the body is a unique and very un-PC adornment. While "Umethar" sounds like a starter in an Indian restaurant, the pneumatic young lady pictured here looks like a serious candidate for Main Course. In actual fact "Umethar" is the name of the weapon she is holding which is one of the Blades of Chaos (apparently). Very handy for threatening an audience that doesn't cheer loudly enough!Bridge - Floating Gibson type bridge from which the strings dive straight into the ferrules that guide them through the body.
Pickups - One BC Rich branded humbucker. On the face of it this might seem like a limitation. In fact it's great fun to play and you find yourself concentrating on playing technique to squeeze out the sounds you need.
Controls - One volume, one tone, nuff said.
Pickguard - None fitted.
Strap-buttons - Huge! These type really should be made the industry standard. Your arms will fall off before this axe slips its strap.
Output Jack - Located on the topside of the lower tail fin. A bit different from the classic Gibson V where it's located on the front of the body.
Finish - All aspects of the finish are flawless.
Sound of the BC Rich Body Art Junior V "Umethar" Guitar
Plugged straight into the hot tubes of the Roost I was able to find all the classic metal tones and when I beefed things up with an overdrive pedal the single pick-up really delivered everything I needed. Cranking back a bit I found some really delicious chunky rock noises.
Overall Impressions of the BC Rich Body Art Junior V "Umethar" Guitar
The more I play V's the more I come to like the fact that they present very little to distract the player from the job in hand. This particular V has definite pose value coupled with an exceptionally playable neck. If the stripped down single humbucker sound fits your musical style this will make an excellent gigging axe with dollops of pose-worthiness.
