Electro Harmonix EH 4800 Small Stone and Small Stone Nano Phase Shifter
Review of the Electro Harmonix Small Stone by The Man in the Jar
Features of the Small Stone
Construction - The Small Stone is a standard folded sheet metal construction typical of Electro-Harmonix pedals. It's very strong and should put up with everything you can throw at it in the course of normal use. The Nano version is housed in an even thicker metal box and looks virtually indestructable.
Ins and Outs - One standard jack in and one standard jack out.
Power - One 9v battery or the optional ac adaptor (not included - 9v 100ma positive tip).
Controls - There's a large knob to control the Rate of the Phase and a two-position slider (or a micro-switch on the Nano) for Color. The standard phase effect works with the Color switch down. Put the Color switch up and the unit chops out some of the frequency spectrum leading to a "hollowing" of the sound. Both units are knocked on and off with a standard medium duty footswitch.
Sound of the Small Stone
With the Color switch in normal position and the Rate knob turned to zero the Small Stone delivered a lazy sweeping phase shift that is both instantly likeable and instantly useable. This effect increases in pleasing degrees up to about 2 o'clock on the control knob. After that the phase is more pronounced and at full on things get a bit silly and it sounds like you're playing under water!
Knock the Color switch up and the nature of the beast changes dramatically. The scooping of the frequencies makes the sweep of the phaser more pronounced and easier for the listener to follow. This means it loses some subtlety but gains in immediacy and excitement - when chopping out funky rhythms on this setting the Small Clone adds a large chunk of "wah-wah" character to the sound.
Overall Impressions of the Small Stone
There's nothing groundbreaking here, just a good solid Phaser with simple controls. The Color setting adds a different and welcome dimension to an excellent, cost-effective phaser package.
