Electro Harmonix EH 4600 Small Clone Chorus

Review of the Electro Harmonix Small Clone by The Man in the Jar

The name of Kurt Cobain is linked to this little box of tricks.

Electro Harmonix Small Clone

Features of the Small Clone

Construction - This is a standard folded sheet metal construction typical of Electro-Harmonix pedals. It's very strong and should put up with everything you can throw at it in the course of normal use.

Ins and Outs - One standard jack in and one standard jack out.

Power - One 9v battery or the optional ac adaptor (not included - 9v 100ma positive tip).

Controls - There's a large knob to control the Rate of the chorus and a two-position slider for Depth (one position is lots of the depth, the other position is not so much depth). The unit is knocked on and off with a standard medium duty footswitch.

Sound of the Small Clone

With the Depth switch up the Small Clone delivers its deeper chorus, which with the Rate knob can be tweaked from a nice subtle warbling to full out psycho-wobble. Knocking the Depth switch to the down position cuts the extent of the modulation and so makes more subtle chorus effects possible. With the Depth cut in this way and the Rate knob set just shy of 12 o'clock this unit produces one of the loveliest chorus sounds I've ever heard. The Small Clone actually mixes the modulated signal in with some direct unaffected signal. The doubling effect together with the audible presence of the unaffected signal makes this chorus very smooth and natural-sounding.

Overall Impressions of the Small Clone

The Electro Harmonix Small Clone is an old-fashioned stomp box that's easy to use due to the simplicity of the controls. This does make it less flexible than some of the larger units available, especially from the digital stables. But the wonderful clarity and integrity of the basic chorus function it provides with that addictive doubling effect makes it well worth the fifty quid you'll be asked to part with.
