Digitech Hyperphase Phaser
Review of the Digitech Hyperphase Phaser by The Man in the Jar
Features of the Digitech Hyperphase
Construction - Extraordinarily solid metal construction with the entire lower end comprising of a very chunky and positive footswitch.
Ins and Outs - One in on the right side of the body with two outs, Norma and Effect. If using just one amp or mixer channel use the normal out. If using two mixer or amp channels you can use the normal out for the dry signal and the second out for the effects signal.
Power - 9 volt battery supplied or optional adaptor.
Controls - The Speed controls the speed of the phaser's sweep. The Depth controls the depth of the shift. The Regen controls the phaser's feedback. The last control is the Type knob which toggles through the seven modes of phase available.
Sound of the Digitech HyperphaseTaking the seven modes in order:
1) Stage A - 4 stage phase shift that provides a glorious classic phaser sound that is so quickly addictive;
2) Stage B - 8 stage phase shifter. This is a more complex version of Stage A;
3) Stage C - 12 stage phase shifter. More complex still;
4) Rise or Fall - When the Regen knob is set to the left this is set to rise, the other way delivers falling phaser. Try chugging out some heavy rock power chords with the falling phase. Glorious;
5) Trig Up - The phaser effect starts at the bottom of its sweep when the trigger threshold is reached. Use the Regen knob to set the threshold. Both this and the Trig Down are unconventional and exciting effects. Great for "talking" guitar solos;
6) Trig Down - The phaser effect starts at the top of its sweep when the trigger threshold is reached;
7) Step - Creates a random square wave phase effect which is quite frankly rather weird.
Overall Impressions of the Digitech HyperphaseThe standard Stage A phase function on this unit is a real creamy classic. If you haven't got phase in your armoury then the Hyperphase is one that should be near the top of your list. The other six Types are a real bonus, especially the Stage B and Falling Phase. For the money, this is an excellent box of tricks.
