Digitech DigiDelay Digital Delay

Review of the Digitech DigiDelay by The Man in the Jar

Digitech DigiDelay Digital Delay

Features of the Digitech DigiDelay

Construction - Extraordinarily solid metal construction with the entire lower end comprising of a very chunky and positive footswitch.

Ins and Outs - One in on the right side of the body with two outs, Norma and Effect. If using just one amp or mixer channel use the normal out. If using two mixer or amp channels you can use the normal out for the dry signal and the second out for the effects signal.

Power - 9 volt battery supplied or optional adaptor.

Controls - The Level knob controls the output to the amp. Repeats controls the number of repeats generated, the maximum clockwise position engages a repeat hold (except in Mode 7, Loop mode). The Time knob is dependent upon which Mode is set. The minimum position gives the shortest delay time for the Mode selected. Turning clockwise moves you through the range of the Mode in play. The Time knob is disabled when the Loop Mode is selected or when the unit is in Tap Tempo Mode.
The Mode control gives you the following selection of delays:
1) 10 to 250 milliseconds;
2) 250 milliseconds to 1 second;
3) 1 to 4 seconds;
4) Vintage Tape Delay Emulator with high frequency degradation (100 milliseconds to 1 second);
5) Digital Delay with Chorused Repeats (10 milliseconds to 1 second);
6) Reverse Delay (1 to 8 seconds);
7) Loop - creates infinite loops of up to four seconds in length

Delays should be "what they say on the tin" units which work with the signal provided in a transparent fashion. The Digitech unit is a superb example that covers an outstanding range of delay types and ranges.

Overall Impressions of the Digitech DigiDelay Digital Delay

Most delay is a fairly prosaic affair, but there is huge scope for fun to be had with the Reverse Delay and the Loop function. With the reverse delay set to fully wet it's possible to lay down some positively otherworldly guitar solos and vocals. For those brave enough to do it, the Loop Mode allows you to lay down and build a unique layered solo performance. This thing is perfect for studio use but the addition of the tap-tempo function means it can crossover successfully to the live stage.
