Danelectro Wasabi Distortion
Review of the Danelectro Wasabi Distortion by The Man in the Jar
Heavy grade, heavy duty distortion.
Features of the Danelectro Wasabi Distortion
Construction - This quite large pedal looks like a car that The Jetsons might drive. The raised tailfins actually house the lights that indicate that the unit is on. The metal construction looks fairly bomb-proof and the metal base-plate has a thick rubber grip with a flip-catch trapdoor for battery access.
Ins and Outs - Standard jack in and jack out.
Power - One 9 volt battery or optional dc power transformer.
Controls - There are five knobs on the top panel. Level sets the output to the amplifier. The Treble and Bass controls are stacked (concentric). The knob in the centre is an EQ Select that allows you to choose four preset voicings or run "flat". There's a very useful Mix control that dictates the blend levels of the wet and dry signals. The Distortion knob controls the level of distortion. There are two footswitches on the unit. One turns it on and off, the other engages the Boost control. There's a switch on the back panel which sets the boost channel to deliver either an extra 5dB or an extra 10dB. Very useful for soloing. There's also a pickup selector switch with three settings. One boosts the signal for single-coils, one attenuates the signal for higher output pickups and a central position puts the unit in "neutral".
Sound of the Danelectro Wasabi Distortion
The travel of the Distortion knob takes you from a nice two-whisky fuzziness right up to a bottle-and-a-half raging roar. The mix control is invaluable if you need to tame the madness slightly at the higher settings.
Overall Impressions of the Danelectro Wasabi Distortion
The Boost switch is a Godsend for soloing and should be a standard feature on all overdrive and distortion units. The range of distortion effects in this box is impressive and it wasn't long before I singled out a dirty boogie tone that suited my playing perfectly.
This is a very high gain device so go easy with the level control, start low and adjust upwards to the required volume.
