Danelectro Milkshake Chorus

Danelectro Milkshake Chorus reviewed by The Man in the Jar

Danelectro Milkshake Chorus

Features of the Danelectro Milkshake Chorus

Construction - This is a tough little moulded blue plastic case. The small size of the unit dictates the small size of the knobs. A chunky plastic sleeve (not illustrated) can be fitted over the top half of the unit to protect the knobs from being stepped on on-stage, this would normally be removed for home or studio use.

Ins and Outs - Standard jack in and jack out.

Power - One 9 volt battery or optional dc power transformer.

Controls - Speed and Depth knobs with a red LED to indicate activity and a discreet circular footswitch to knock the thing in and out of line.

Sound of the Danelectro Milkshake Chorus

Setting both Speed and Depth controls at zero gives a nice usable effect, a kind of Dire Straits dreaminess. Advancing the Speed to maximum adds a nice "wobble" effect that lends a great vibrato feel to single note runs. Backing the speed off to halfway I tried cranking the depth out maximum. But on this setting the sweep of the chorus became a bit much for me with a kind of "de-tune" effect at the extreme end of the sweep. Dragging the depth back by 1/3 of a turn returned me to the realm of pronounced, but useable chorus effects that will integrate with your band's sound rather than fight with it.

Overall Impressions of the Danelectro Milkshake Chorus

It's no bad thing when the maxed-out settings on an effect take you further into that effect than you might otherwise naturally go. It means that all the sounds you're probably looking for are in there somewhere. I personally really liked the subtle edge this unit gave to lead runs when the Speed and Depth are at minimum. But my favourite setting is Speed at 12 o'clock and Depth at 10 o'clock. Here I found a great sound for driving indie rhythms or classic disco grooves.

Incidentally this unit teams up really nicely with the Danelectro Pepperoni Phaser when both are run together on the same signal.
