Danelectro FAB Metal

Review of the Danelectro FAB Metal by The Man in the Jar

As the name suggests this little black box has evil in mind. Basically it's a very naughty Distortion Box.

Danelectro FAB Metal

Features of the Danelectro FAB Metal

Construction - The Fab has a modernist look about it with raised mouldings housing the control knobs that look like the fins on a '50s Cadillac. The body is made of plastic with a metal bottom plate. As on Danelectro's "lunchbox" models the plate is removable by unscrewing a single large plastic screw (which can conveniently be operated by a 1p coin if you leave your tool-kit at home). This exposes the entire interior to give access to the battery compartment.

Ins and Outs - Standard jack in and jack out.

Power - One 9 volt battery or optional dc power transformer.

Controls - One Level to control output to the amp, one Tone and one Gain control.

Sound of the Danelectro FAB Metal

With the Gain down near minimum the FAB Metal produces the most gorgeous heavy blues sound. Bear in mind it's about as heavy as you'd want a blues sound to be, but it is nice to know it's there. But the Metal isn't about blues and at this setting it hasn't even thought about getting out of bed.
Move the Gain up to one quarter and the Metal antics begin. Here we find a great chunky sound ripe for chugging power chords. But we're still only pushing the limits of heavy rock and this bus is supposed to go to Metal-land.
Take the Gain up to halfway and the FAB Metal starts to deliver the mournful Sabbath-style overload that adds portent to every chord and run. Three quarters on the Gain and the heavily saturated Recto-style overdrive leads you to approach your guitar with a new-found respect. Sensitivity at string level is now approaching extreme and only the heaviest of metal is now in the frame.
Take the Gain to the max, call your girlfriend and tell her not to wash tonight, strap on your pointiest axe and go beserk.

Overall Impressions of the Danelectro FAB Metal

I was impressed by the FAB Metal. I had expected a one-trick-pony, but the sounds in the lower reaches of the Gain control are very useable outside the Metal genre.

This is a very high gain device so go easy with the level control, start low and adjust upwards to the required volume.
