Danelectro Black Paisley Overdrive
Review of the Danelectro Black Paisley by The Man in the Jar
The description on the box is "Liquid Metal".
Features of the Danelectro Black Paisley
Construction - Although this pedal looks like its "lunchbox" siblings it is in fact considerably larger and the robust casing is made of metal. The underside plate is also metal and is secured to the casing by four screws. Access to the battery compartment is via a flip-catch trapdoor. The topside has a wild paisley livery with a vintage-style Danelectro "D" badge with stylised wings.
Ins and Outs - Standard jack in and jack out.
Power - One 9 volt battery or optional dc power transformer.
Controls - Level determines the output to the amp. There's a Bass control and a Treble control that behave in the normal way but there's also a three-way switch for fixed midrange changes; left to Boost, right to Scoop and centre for off (bypass). There's a Distortion control and a small switch to engage the Low Octave.
Sound of the Danelectro Black Paisley
Even with the Distortion set at minimum the Black Paisley delivers a saturated voice. Boosting the Bass and Treble beyond 12 o'clock really chunks up the sound. Increasing the Distortion racks up the sensitivity at string level but the basic overdriven Recto-style voice remains true.
The Midrange Boost and Scoop add two distinctive new voices. The Scoop option is the most obviously useful, adding a more modern profile to the sound. Flick the Octave switch and your guitar sound gets an added bass tone. This is superb for menacing low register runs and high solos. But beware not to play more than two strings at once as this tends to confuse Octave circuitry and cause break-up of the added signal. It is a shame that the Octave isn't controlled by a separate footswitch which would make it easier to knock in and out mid-number.Overall Impressions of the Danelectro Black Paisley
You have to play Heavy Metal to have a use for this pedal. If Metal is your bag then this pedal will deliver all the goods you can handle.
This is a very high gain device so go easy with the level control, start low and adjust upwards to the required volume.
