Review of the Line 6 Bass PODxt Live Foot Controller
If you have been playing bass as long as I have, you'll remember there was a time when there were no bass effects available. Bassists borrowed wah pedals or distortion stompboxes from other guitarists, and lived with sounds and effects which were designed for instruments with a very different frequency response and character than the basses they were playing. Of course this has now changed. Line 6 certainly contributed to improving bass players lives with the original Bass POD and then the Bass PODxt offering a whole range of effects, amps, cabs, and mics dedicated for basses. Recently, Line 6 have further improved the lives of bass players with the Variax 700 Bass, a bass guitar containing models of 20 vintage and modern bass instruments. With the introduction of the Bass PODxt Live, Line 6 has made bassists equal to their guitar playing friends.
The Line 6 Bass PODxt Live is clearly made for stage use, housed in a seriously strong metal case, knobs protected by a roll bar, big switches that light up when activated and far enough apart you don’t have to worry about hitting the wrong one. Even the preset up-down selectors can be clicked for one-step changes, or held down to scroll quickly to another setting. Line 6 includes a built-in expression pedal which can be set for volume, wah, or your choice of other parameter shifts in real-time. Clearly the Bass PODxt Live has been designed for smooth, fast, and confident onstage operation, and to survive living on the road.

The most interesting connector on the Bass PODxt Live is the RJ45, which is an input for the Line 6 Variax 700 Bass. Use a Line 6 Digital Cable from the Variax to the Bass PODxt Live and you have a digital signal from guitar to amp, and DC power to the Variax. By selecting a channel from the Bass PODxt Live footswitches and you recall all the effects, pickups, tone control setting plus amp and guitar selections that make up your custom sound.
The Bass PODxt Live contains 64 presets or
memory channels arranged in 16 banks, with 4 channels per bank.
Banks 1-6 are optimized for use with headphones, PA systems,
in-ear-monitors, or recording. Banks 7-12 are optimized for use
with a bass amp. Banks 13-15 are designed to be used
specifically with the Variax 700 Bass guitar. The last Bank is
empty and intended as a starting point for creating your own
presets without having to overwrite a factory preset. All the
tones are provided in the presets, from sweet and clear acoustic
bass sounds to outrageously overdriven attitude. |

The guy's at iMuso leant me one of
the Bass PODxt Lives to play with and write a review for them. To be
honest, they ain't getting it back. The modelling capabilities and
effects that are available on these units are endless. I haven't
even begun to find all the sounds available, but suffice it to say,
I'm keeping the Bass PODxt Live for myself. I can't really imagine
life without it now and for only £329.99 you can try one out for
yourself, you'll see why. For the full list of effects etc, look at iMuso's website at the Line 6 Bass PODxt Live Foot Controller or for the guitar version, the Line 6 PODxt Live Foot Controller Reviewed by a very happy "20th Century Bassboy" |
