Ibanez AW15 LG Acoustic Guitar

Review of the Ibanez AW15 LG Acoustic Guitar by The Man in the Jar

I'm a great fan of my Ibanez Destroyer electric so I was keen to try one of his sound-box buddies.

Ibanez AW15 LG Acoustic Guitar

Features of the Ibanez AW15 LG

Tuners - Sealed Ibanez branded gold tuners with knobs in an attractive coffee-coloured pearloid. Good and accurate.

Headstock - Basic three-a-side paddle design. Attractive in its simplicity.

Nut - Made from Ivorex, which I assume is an elephant friendly copy of ivory (I still have pangs of guilt about the real ivory nut on my Shergold Masquerader).

Neck - A nice slim neck which instantly feels comfortable in the hand. Exactly what I've come to expect from the Ibanez brand.

Fretboard - A dusty-cocoa-brown rosewood with a nice tight grain and white pearloid dot markers.

Frets - Thin frets, smoothly finished.

Action - Nice and low from the box, very playable, which is a nice surprise on a guitar that retails for around £150.

Body - This medium-sized Dreadnought has a solid cedar top and mahogany body. The front binding is finished off with three classy pinstripes. The body depth narrows considerably as you move from bottom to heel which makes it a very comfortable guitar to play, especially when seated. The rosette is inlaid with plain strips of what looks like mahogany, a nicely understated design. The cedar top has a nice autumnal brown hue (not the evil mustard-orange as it appears in the photograph above).

Bridge - The bridge is made from a slightly darker rosewood than the fretboard and supports an Ivorex saddle which is compensated with a stagger at the second string to improve intonation. The white bridge pins look a bit stark, I would've preferred cream to match the binding.

Pickguard - Attractive thin mock tortoiseshell teardrop shape.

Strap-buttons - A nice solid metal button is screwed into the bottom of the body properly with a proper metal screw. Another nice surprise at this price.

Finish - Overall this is a classy little guitar with no obvious flaws in construction or finish.

Sound of the Ibanez AW15 LG

The woods used and the strutting techniques employed create a good vibrant, resonating voice, sweet and crisp in the higher register and full and throaty in the mid-range. The bass response is in nice balance with these but lacks the boom that a larger body might give.

Overall Impressions of the Ibanez AW15 LG

Once again Ibanez have come up with the goods as far as I'm concerned. The playability and the clarity of voice are excellent for a guitar of this price, with the added advantage of a "name" on the headstock. If you need a back up to your gigging box or just fancy having an affordable acoustic around the house, the AW15 is a great choice.
