Picked up my Epi Les Paul Ultra today, reviewed a bunch of Digitech pedals with it and then took it straight to rehearsals this evening. What a fabulous little axe.

It'll be detuned a semi-tone and used for the usual suspect Thin Lizzy numbers, and boy does it look the part for that stuff as well as sounding spot on.

(Falling in love again, never vanted to....  La la la... oink)

Hey man!

I am considering getting the Ultra [the light-weight and better neck] or the Classic Plus [slim taper neck] and I am wondering how slim the Ultra's neck is? I would prefere the Ultra if its neck wasn't that much thicker than the Classic Plus because of the light-weight and my crap back, but I would have to go with the fast slim neck with a heavy body over a thick neck anyday.

Thanks for your attention.

The scale-length on the two guitars is exactly the same. The nut width on the Ultra is 1.65 as opposed to 1.68 on the Classic Plus.

The Ultra is a superbly slim and playable neck, although I haven't tried a Classic Plus I can't see that it is more comfortable than the Ultra, purely on the evidence of the slightly wider nut. The lightweight is also a huge advantage (not to mention that gorgeous maple top).

At the time of writing, iMuso have got a great "while stocks last" deal going on the Ultra which makes it an even more attractive proposition.

Hi,

Hope you don't mind me dragging up an older topic here. I'm seriously considering a purchase of the Epi LP Ultra, having read so many good things about it, not least of all your own valued review (and the fact that you put your money where you mouth is!).

The only thing I'm unsure about is the semi-hollow construction, and whether this will limit the versatility of its sound. I mainly like to play classic rock stuff (Bad Company, Zep, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy etc), but also like to bash out some of the heavier stuff occasionally like Maiden, GnR, Metallica, Ozzy etc. Would you say the Ultra can offer reasonably good sounds for the heavier rock / metal as well?

Cheers,
p.s. Do you know if Imuso are still doing the 'clearance' deal you mentioned earlier in the year. I haven't really been following the prices on this one. Thanks.

I'm told that the Ultra has been discontinued. This represents the biggest piece of madness I've heard in ages! Why do people discontinue excellent guitars? Answers on a West Ham season ticket to the usual address...

What! Man, that's crazy. I read dozens of reviews and hardly anyone had a bad word to say about it. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Thanks for letting me know anyhow.

It turns out that someone must have read this thread and 'phoned Epiphone in the US. They emailed us telling us the Ultra was not discontinued, just that the UK distributor didn't want to import them. Anyway... the latest news is that 50 have now been ordered by the distributor and are on the way to the UK.

I would, of course, welcome any comments from the distributor on this forum

That's an interesting twist. I had contacted Gibson directly myself after reading what 'The Man' had posted, and they said it wasn't discontinued, but never said anything about the UK distributor (whoever that is) not wanting to import it.

Well, thanks to imuso (and this thread I suppose) my name's on one of those 50. Get your orders in early folks! Can hardly wait for mine.

Just as a quick footnote to this thread, thought I should say that I received my Epi LP Ultra a few weeks ago from imuso, and it has been a few weeks of absolute playing pleasure. Thanks to TMitJ for his review, which I thought was spot on. This guitar gets a big thumbs up from me!
