I recently bought, privately, what was advertised as a USA Gibson Les Paul Standard. Having only ever played Fenders I'm not very knowledgeable about Gibsons and I suspect that the one I have bought might be a fake, because the Gibson logo on the headstock doesn't look quite right. Are there any absolute ways to tell if a Les Paul is genuine?

Is there a serial number visible anywhere?

Yes, it has a serial number engraved on the back of the headstock. I've checked the number on the Gibson web-site and this gave me the year and the factory where the guitar was made. But is that enough to authenticate it as a genuine Gibson?

The serial number checks out, it's a set neck guitar, I suspect it's genuine. Can you post a picture of the logo that made you suspicious in the first place?

Have attached a picture of the front of the headstock. The letter i on the word Gibson looks to be in a lower position than on the Gibson web-site and the spacing on the word MODEL looks tighter than on other Gibsons.

Thanks for all your help and advice. The guitar certainly sounds good and plays well, so I'm more than happy. I was more concerned that I'd been conned. Happy picking!
