| My brother plays predominately blues and was complaining recently that he had lost direction. He has one of those infernal multi-effects that make a zillion different noises and I suspect he gets distracted and plays the same riffs through different effects until he gets bored. I was browsing at iMuso for a birthday present to give him and came across the DigiTech Screamin' Blues effects pedal. I whacked my Tele through it and was very impressed with the results. Basically you've got high and low eq and a gain control which sets the overdrive level. The results are beautiful blues tones that really can be made to scream at the higher distortion levels. I handed the guitar to iMuso's resident finger-pickin' blues expert and (after winding back the gain a bit to accomodate his style) got the thumbs up from him. So when I visit my brother this weekend I shall hide his multi-fx at the back of the fridge and force him to use only the Blues Screamer for a whole week. If he isn't back in touch with his soul after that I shall give him up as a lost cause!

| Good call there ... but even so, I consider blues to be all about the purest tone. Now I don't know how much you have to lavish on your bro in law but an all tube amp will having him bending those B and G strings like no tomorrow ... my pick a Fender Blues Junior! I just wish I had the skill and touch required of good blues to warrant such an amp ...

| I'd normally be wary of digitech pedals, maybe because cynics like me can think only of the RP100 when the name digitech comes up, and not the whammy and their other quality inventions. But, if they've done a good job, good on them. They do a tubescreamer clone (bad monkey), i'm wondering what that'd be like. |

| I've been kicking over the forum posts from the early days. I don't mind good-natured mickey taking MIJ but do I detect a hint of snobbery raising its ugly head: infernal multi-effects"?
There are plenty of unnecessary comments infesting golf, football, fishing etc, please keep it out of the forum. Perhaps "infernal multi-effects was simply an inappropriate choice of words, or maybe a writer's device to kick start a debate. I do know it is a kick in the teeth for Imuso customers who bought these "infernal multi-effect" pedals. I don't suppose Mr Imuso was too pleased with you either MIJ.
Hey, we're all mates here and from personal experience the Man in the Jar is partially correct. His shrewd assertion that once the initial feeding frenzy for newer and better multi guitar effects is over, a player can lose focus and become a riff junkie. Stuck in a rut, thrashing out the same tired old phrases again and again, buried under a blizzard of different settings. But you can't knock the awesome "infernal multi-effect" for that - it's a machine, okay.
Multi-effect guitar pedals are purchased quite legally from Imuso everyday. Whatever next? A dawn police raid at Imuso. Booking into the Priory..!
My DigiTech RP250 has 60 pre-set voices. I have edited down to 28 but realistically use perhaps 8 favourites. I suggest using these "infernal multi-effects" in conjunction with your band, tape machine, computer or the DigiTech JamMan looper. Follow the DigiTech JamMan link from Imuso direct to DigiTech. Click on JamMan demo to see the coolest guitar playing and a master class in string bending.
I've attached some photos at the bottom of the page of my DigiTech multi effect pedal, JamMan and footswitch, all connected to guitar, mike and headphones - CD quality sound. Guests, you'll have to login as a member to see them.
One further point, MIJ. To get your brother rehabilitated, why on earth didn't you buy him a mandolin or a ukulele from Imuso? I found the Collins mandolin excellent value. I haven't tried any of Imuso budget priced ukes yet, but they are generally cheerful little instruments and loadsa fun to play.
Be happy! PS if the pics are too small, I'll resize them.

| | You've never sat through my brother's "listen to this, no, (click) listen to this, no, (click) listen to this, no, (click) listen to this... It's an irrefutable fact that most of the world's best and most famous guitar players have a trademark sound. For original music performance it's important to have a trademark sound. For the guitarist doing covers it's important to be able to create something close to other people's trademarks. This is where multi-effects and modellers come in. Most people prune the number of sounds they use way down from the number available, but because most multi-effects are so cost-effective there's no harm in having a bunch of "redundant" patches. Where a multi-effects takes on its own brand of inferniality is when it stands in the way of a players progress by being a fun-to-mess-with-distraction. I know. I have a Flextone and a Variax and both are far too much fun to tinker with. It's only with a bit of discipline that I get anything done at all!

| All of the multi-FX systems (well, the ones that incorporate modelling, or distortion, or anything that tries to take the place of an amp - there's nothing wrong with a quality TC Electronic or similar processor for reverb and delay) sound awful IMO, and certainly shouldn't be used for blues wherever possible! A choice analogue stompbox can be a beautiful thing (I have an original Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal (not the current BB2 POS) that sounds terrific), but simplicity is the key with the blues. And, indeed, for any style of music really. A dedicated unit will almost always sound better than the jack-of-all-trades that by its very nature a multi-FX unit is, and I don't care how good these digital modelling systems are purported to have become, to my ears they still sound processed and fake (I've tried most of them over the years). So I fully defend tMitJ's "infernal multi-effects" comment!

| Hey there Uke Man! If everyone is going to start bragging about owning a DigiTech multi purpose effect pedal, I want some of the action.
It's so cool to flip quickly back and forth from clean funk to blues overdrive, to acoustic guitar, to wah-wah, to bass guitar, to steppin', to tap out ad infinitum and back again with a mere tap of the toe.
In clubs (mostly empty) I think this style of music is refered to as "Post-Modern Jazz".
Don't be put off, you'll be delighted with your DigiTech RP model. But heed the warning given by The Man in the Jar and be selective in how and when to use it.

| For christmas i was given a Line 6 Toneport UX2. I was fully expecting a poor attempt at guitar sounds, but through a good pair of 'phones, it sounds pretty nice.
Still blues through a multi-effects? its like toasting yoghurt. DONT DO IT.
