Hi, I play six string and am seriously considering an Epi EB-0 just for the occassional play around with. I know ideally I should get a bass amp to go with it but for the occassional home use would a standard guitar amp give me reasonable performance? I play through a Peavey Envoy practice amp.

Cheers

The problem with lower notes is the bigger wavelength. The reason this causes a problem is down to how your speaker produces the sound. For a high note the speaker performs a shorter in-and-out motion to produce the shorter wavelength. For a low note the amount of travel (known as excursion) is greater due to the longer wavelength.

Your practise amp is designed to handle the frequencies generally put out by your six string. Playing bass through it will probably cause the speaker cone to regularly hit its excursion limit. This will cause distortion (in the form of robust farting) in the short term and destruction of the coil and/or cone in the long term.

Hello "M.I.J." Thanks for the reply. I had figured that I would just get a less than perfect sound, I certainly don't want to destroy my amp!

Incidently, I read your review on the Vintage Zip and thought you may be interested in some mod's I made to mine. I found the tone dark as you mentioned but also quite flat and lifeless. I really like the look of it and as it is pretty cheap tried various mod's. After trying various permutations the final result is I have three matched single coils instead of the stock two. One is in the bridge position as per a Strat or Tele and the other two replace the originals but as I have put them in pickup surounds the forward one is around half an inch closer the neck than the standard. the middle two are still wired together as HB but with a coil tap and the bridge PU has a reverse switch all connected to a three way switch. That gives me options of Bridge only, Bridge and 'forward' middle out of phase. Bridge and 'forward' middle in phase, Bridge and HB out of Phase, bridge and HB in phase, HB only, 'Forward' middle only.

That gives you everything from Surf sounds to meaty rock. A carefull set up including tweeking the truss has made it sustain really well. I guess I have spent c£200 all in, including things tried and discarded but have got a unique instrument out of it.
For just a few pounds you could split the standard pickups and add custom switching to get a good range of tones.
