We need more information to help you.

What music do you like to play?
Any particular effect that you've heard in a song, that you would like to emmuate?
Whats your budget?

I play mostly rock i'd like to try an emulate the sounds of the funky sounds from the early beastie boys albums and the sounds josh homme creates from queens of the stone age. my budget is about £50. i haven't been playing very long a couple of months now.

Imo (and it is a matter of opinion), id go for a good versitile overdrive pedal (the boss OS-2, but again thats personal preference).

Get into a guitat shop, tell them you want to try every stomp box they have for 50 quid, and play them all (through an amp similar to yours).

Its important that you decide what would benefit YOU more. Try some out.

HI,Zoom and Behringer both do a multi FX pedal that should fill most requirements.I have been using a Zoom 505 for several years now and it is OK for me.Jim.

Wouldn't touch a Behringer multi-FX unit with a VERY large stick. Zoom do some nice sounding stuff for those on an extreme budget. As others have said, a decent overdrive or distortion pedal would be a good place to start though... the classic Boss DS-1 is about as generic and versatile as you're likely to find, will outlive you (literally!) and is really cheap.
