| Hello,
After trying to get a working band together, I have finally lost the cores so to speak, and decided to go it alone. I have my Guitar, FX Board, AMP and a Computer
With price in mind how do I record my guitar tunes on the PC?
What equipment do you use and which software would you recommend
Cheapest
Mod
Expensive

| Small question, huge answer.
Right first of all, your computer needs to be set up properly to run CPU and memory intensive audio apps, so:
1Gb of RAM is a minimum
Don't run Vista (yet)
Buy a soundcard (see on)
Fast CPUs are not as important as a few years ago, but horsepower is important
Now, soundcard ... do you own a desktop or laptop?
Laptops will generally require USB, Firewire or PCMIA audiocards. Firewire gives the best performance. Desktops can also use PCI cards, although these are slowly being phased out in favour PCIe cards.
You can spend from £40 odd to thousands, from Behringer to Apogee. A soundcard is necessary, how much you pay depends on what features you want (and the more you pay, the more you get and at better quality).
Next: software. Assuming you have a PC, you will need some kind of recording software. Most people opt for a sequencer of some description.
Loads of soundcards come free with bundled versions of Cubase or Tracktion or even Protools and these are an excellent starting point. Versions of all the major software bundles are available at different price points and with different features.
Cubase (c£80-£600)
Tracktion (currently around £50)
Sonar (c£50-£300)
Protools - with hardware (from around £150 to many thousands).
and there are others too
So now you have your PC and soundcard running your software of choice ... the sky is the limit in terms of what you can buy as extras, from high-eng mastering plug-ins to virtual instruments.
I would advise you get your hands on a copy of Computer Music magazine. It will lead you into computer music gently (especially so if you can locate one of their special issues dedicated to the novice computer musician).
Good luck!
By the way: Guitar > effects board > soundcard line in >FW> PC
or Guitar > effects board > amp > microphone > preamp > soundcard lin in etc etc

| LINE 6 TONE PORT is a good option and quite cheap. you get the interface to plug your guitar into and that then connects to your computer via USB. you then get software which models guitar amps and cabs and guitar effects, you get bass amp and cab models, and you get vocal models and effects. the recording is done on a serprate software which works alongside the modelling software i mentioned. keep in mind the amps models obviously wont be as good as the real amps itself but they are pretty ok.
you select your amp and cab and effects then record or you can record without the models and effects straight from your amp. you then record as many tracks as you wish. i recomend checking one out. look at line 6 website and check out computer requirements first.

| Alot of the optional extras are of personal opinion. (eg. i like conroling things from a control mixer, and not using mouse/keyboard ect.)
You will develop tastes so id try to go in a "already made" studio to see how u like things.
Good luck.
