Have been talking 1st guitar amp for learning on - and have had some great feedback. The consensus is that the Roland Cube 15x is the one to go for – so I will.

That leaves the guitar.

I was set on getting the Yamaha Pacifica 112v – but before committing - should I also be considering the Ibanez GRG170DX?

I know it’s a big question – but which is the more versatile for learning rock / blues?

From what I understand - the Ibanez is better set up for playing heavier sounds - so is the Pacifica 112v better in other areas, or just as good?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

I'd plump for the Ibanez - but it does have a more complex and more sensitive vibrato (trem) bridge. The Pacifica has a vintage style vibrato bridge which is easier to block off, making the guitar into a "hardtail", which is easier for learning.

The Ibanez will give a wide range of tones but will be beaten at the cleaner end of things by the Pacifica. The Pacifica is also very versatile but will be beaten at the heavier end of things by the Ibanez.

Me? I'd take the Ibanez.

I replied to this in the other forum, but I'd go for the Ibanez too... then again, I'm a little biased as I have four Ibanez guitars (and have had two others fairly recently). But the Ibanez Gios are amazing value for money, excellent guitars. And the bridge isn't too much of a hassle to deal with, certainly much less so than a double locking "Floyd Rose" style bridge. I found one good way to keep it in place and in tune was to stuff a bit of foam either side of the bridge block (from the back panel) which helps to keep things much more stable, while not completely preventing you using the bar.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

If I could play good rock and metal I don't think I would hesitate with the Ibanez - but I cant play zilch at the moment and so I think that the Pacifica will suit me better until I get to that level. (I also prefer its looks to Ibanez)

As for the amp - I was set on a Roland Cube 15x - but then I saw what the Roland Micro Cube could do - unbelievable!

So my beginners set up will be .....

Pacifica 112v (black) and a Roland Micro Cube (red)

Aaaarrrggghhh!!!!

Sorry, just had to get that out of my system!
Ibanez are NOT just metal guitars... you'll see jazzers, country musicians, blues guitarists, you name it using them. I'm not saying the Ibanez IS a better guitar than the Yamaha, but don't rule it out because of the way it looks! After all, noone told Albert King that the Flying V was meant to be a metal guitar, and he did pretty well with it

Point taken.

I'll try both in the shop first - see how they feel. I am aiming to buy at the end of April.

99.99% certain I will take the Micro Cube though.

Thanks again.
