Hi,

I recently purchased (not from hear i regreterbly say) a godin xtSA, which is a really clever electric guitar, that does electric acoustic and synth. However, the electric pickups (in HSH configuration) are not to my liking, they are rather harsh ceramic pickups. I have two questions:

1) knowing all the sensitive electrics inside the guitar does anyone know of a guitar tech they would trust to swap pickups on a £1000 guitar full of electrical wizardry?

and 2) knowing the high sustain of the rock maple body and mahogony neck, does anyone know of any nice vintage style pickups (HSH setup) that would maintain the clarity of every note, will allow coil tapping, and sound something simmilar to a DiMarzio virtual PAF, im interested in looking into different combinations based on a kinda vintage humbucker sound, with the coil taps when selecting with the single coil so the humbucker does not overpower the single coil, preferably im also looking for a fairly hot single coil for that centre position.

Would appreciate any experiences with different pickups and what they added/removed tonally.

Many thanks

Drew

Good, cos I don't really know where to start on this! I do all my own tech work, so can't recommend anyone, I'm afraid... there's a guy called the Guitar Doctor in this part of the UK (he's based in Stoke On Trent) that comes highly recommended from some of my friends though.

I've never really used medium/low-output humbuckers, so I can't offer any recommendations there. I'm very happy with all my DiMarzio pickups though, it's hard to go wrong with 'em. The website has lots of useful techy information that may help educate your decision a little, plus their customer service is top notch, so drop them a line and see what they recommend!

For the vintage style humbuckers I'd recommend the Gibson Burstbucker range. They come in three flavours numbered 1, 2 and 3, with the three being the hottest. All are based on the original PAF humbuckers with inexact windings and no wax potting. After reviewing the Gibson BFG I was so impressed with the Burstbucker 3 that I've bought one to put into my Epi Ultra. They're about £100 each from Europe but check out EvilBay for a handful of US shops who are prepared to defy Gibson rules and ship to the UK. I got mine for £65 (and I'm on the prowl for a Burstbucker 2 to match it in the neck position).

A quick search on t'interweb for "hot single coil" throws up some Seymour Duncan models such as the SSL3. This is a brand I would trust. Also Kinman (I have a set of Vintage Noisless in my Rossicaster) and I'd second the Hog's recommendation of Di-Marzio. I found a review of stacked single coils from Kinman and Di-Marzio CLICK HERE to read.

As far as installation is concerned you should take detailed notes and photographs of the original wiring as a safety net. But generally pickups have the same output wiring so it should just be a matter of a fine soldering iron tip, a steady hand and a stout heart.

Thanks for the info,

im looking to see if the burstbuckers come as uncovered pickups, i like the sound of them, and also i especially like the sound of the Kinman stacked single coils, now to see if iMuso stock them... (just to say its not so much the pickup wiring that scares me, its the massive circuitboard for the synth pickup i dont want to damage....)

Edit: the burstbucker is out as it doesnt coil tap

Edit 2: I like the sound of a DiMarzio PAF at bridge and neck, with a red vlvet in central position to allow me to get the correct tone on 2 and 4, i shall let you all know how i get on with this, it is certainly a sign that in no price range is a guitar beyond customisation to make it the guitar you want it to be,,,
