Hi all,

First of all, i appologise now for my lack of recording knowledge. I am totally new to all of this and would like some help please. I'll tell you what i've got then hopefully someone will help me with what i need (on a budget of course). Laptop with 512 Ram, Cubase SX, Les Paul and a Vox AD30VT amp. I am hoping to turn a small bedroom into a bit of a studio just to play about with and have some fun. I realise i need a Preamp of some sort but which one? i'm also not sure if i can just buy a Mixer with preamps in it so i can also record Bass and Vocal ect... Can anyone please tell me exactly what i need to start? All i want to do is basically record my own songs.

Thanks a lot

PS i have only just purchased Cubase and have no idea how to use it yet.

A little bit late in responding but ...

512 of RAM will be struggling to run Cubase and more than just a few tracks ... if you can upgrade it then you would see a big improvement in performance.

As for a preamp, perhaps a little Behringer mixer would be a good "toe in the water" type of investment (http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=ST00499). The other thing I would recommend is that you look at some of the software/hardware emulators like Guitar Rig (http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=SW00821) or Line6 Toneport (http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=EG00890) etc.

Another thing is that you don't mention a soundcard. For a number of reasons (latency, sound quality, longevity of sockets), a soundcard would be a good purchase (although both Guitar Rig and Toneport are also soundcards). Not only that, but you can now buy combined soundcard/mixers that will enable you to record high digital audio quality multitracks incorporating a physical input for your cables (eg http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=ST00444).
