Basically Speaking, The Bass Guitar Rocks
Believe it or not, there is really no such thing as a bass guitar. What guitarists commonly refer to as bass guitars are actually more properly called electric basses or horizontal acoustic basses.
The instrument to which all the terms refer is the same, however, none of the makers of the electric basses have ever used the common term to identify their products. It is thought that the term was created by guitar catalog copy and stuck as a popular term.
Whatever you call it, the bass is a stringed instrument that is similar in design to the electric guitar.
This Ain't No Fish - This Bass Is Purely Instrumental
The bass is larger than the electric guitar. In addition, the bass comes in fretted and fretless versions. Basses - which comes strung with as few as 4 strings as many as 12 strings - play out in a much lower range than your regular guitar.
The bass evolved from the double bass, which is a member of the violin family. You won't, however, see any guitarists holding the bass up to their chins and playing with a bow!
The electric bass is the standard in many types of music, including country, jazz, rock and roll, soul, and even in modern orchestral music. No matter if it's a Fender, Martin, Gibson, Taylor, or Ibanez, bass guitarists love to make their guitars howl.
