Overview
The VOX AC4 appeared in 1961 as a compact 4-watt all-valve amp.
The VOX AC4TV8 compact practice guitar combo amplifier features
the classic combination of a 12AX7 valve in the modified preamp
and an EL84 valve in the power amp.
The original VOX AC4 used the EF86 Preamp Pentode valve and an
EL84 Power Pentode valve. These valves were fine for the 1950s
guitarist, as there was no cascading preamp gain stage. This
meant the amplifier would not overdrive well. VOX decided this
circuit would not be suitable for the modern day guitarist, as
now guitarists like to have the options of clean, crunch or
saturated overdrive. Not a re-issue, the VOX AC4TV8 combo amp
is an up-to-date rethinking of the valve circuit that matches
today's needs. The power amp is single-ended a Class A circuit
to deliver a wide variety of tones ranging from that clean
British sound to distinctive VOX overdrive.
Single-ended circuitry, used in the VOX AC4TV8 combo amp, means
neither side of the output circuit is referenced to ground. The
full swing of the output voltage goes across the speaker. An
efficient way to get high SPL output from a 4 watt valve
amplifier.
In the past, the way to over-drive an amp for serious
distortion was to raise the volume. The VOX AC4TV8 combo
amplfier provides three levels of power attenuation: a full
output 4-Watts, 1-Watt, and 1/10-Watts. Even at the minimum
level of 1/10-Watts, the VOX AC4TV8 combo can provide great
all-valve distortion. Enjoy your favorite overdriven tone even
when playing or recording in your own room or late at
night.
Other features include the 8-inch custom Celestion speaker, a
16-ohm speaker output jack for driving external speaker cabs
like the VOX V412BN for even more powerful sound, and the retro
TV Front styling from the 1958 VOX amp designs.
