The classic single-ended circuit design Class-A Laney CUB 8
outputs 5-watts RMS of vintage valve guitar tones into a single
Celestion Super 8 8-inch driver.
Small combo amp, big tone from the 5-watt Laney CUB 8 guitar
combo amplifier. And easy to operate, 1 knob controls the
volume and 1 tone control knob. The great valve tone of the CUB
8 combo comes from a ECC83 valve in the preamp stage and a
single 6V6GT valve in the output stage.
The Laney CUB 8 combo amp is perfect for any situation where
the sound pressure level has to be low, but the tone perfect,
with a ECC83 preamp valve and a 6V6GT output valve operating in
single-ended Class A circuitry. Single-ended means the amp's
output is not referenced to ground, so you get the amps' full
voltage swing into the speaker. A circuit design from the
beginning days of radio and subsequntly used in the early
classic valve amp designs. Class A means the output valve is
always turned on for a valve amp's trademark quick response
with loads of harmonics when overdriven.
The Laney CUB 8 valve combo guitar amplifier features 8 -16 ohm
external speaker outputs so you can drive any kind of extension
speaker, from a single 8-inch extensio cabinet to a 4x12-inch
cab.
The Laney Cub 8 combo's cabinet is finished in black leather
grain vinyl and features built-in mains lead storage on the
rear grille and a comfortable soft grip handle for easy
transportation.
Single-ended class-A circuitry, as used in the Laney Cub 8
combo amplifier, means the output valve is connected to one
side of the Cub 8 output transformer's primary winding. The
other side of the transformer primary is wired to the power
supply. While giving less output power than the alternative
push-pull circuitry, single-ended class-A produces more even
order harmonics when over-driven. A great advantage to guitar
players as even order harmonics provide the rich tone
associated with classic class-a valve guitar amps.
When an amplifier's output valves are passing current at all
times, including when the amplifier is at idle with no music
playing, whether the amplifier is single ended or push-pull,
the amplifier is said to be biased in Class A. Because the
current is flowing at all times, an input signal causes the
current to be immediately diverted to the speakers, and
therefore, the sound is very fast and responsive. In the case
of a push-pull amplifier, there is also less crossover
distortion when the signal passes from the positive to the
negative or negative to positive voltages, since each side of
the push-pull section is already turned on.

Features of the Laney Cub 8 Valve Amp
The Laney Cub 8 is simplicity itself, designed to deliver creamy valve tones in environments where high volume is not required. The diminutive cab is really well-built with plastic protectors on each of the eight corners. The front of the cab has an asymmetrical, old-style speaker cloth and a badge bearing the Laney logo. On the top of the cabinet is a sturdy soft-grip carrying handle which sits slightly forward of the recessed control panel.
The control panel is very straightforward. From left-to-right we first find a chunky power switch. This is a simple on/off toggle and doesn't have a standby position which is sometimes found on valve amps. This switch is partnered by a large red lamp that glows when the amplifier is on. Next along is a single tone control that's especially tuned for this amp and a single volume control. Both controls have vintage-style chicken-head knobs. Finally there are two input jacks. The first is marked as "Lo" and is attenuated down by about 50%. Use this input to produce cleaner sounds (the attenuation reduces your ability to overdrive the valves. The other input is labelled "Hi". Use this one to overdrive the valves for creamy distortion.
The back of the amp has a strong, kick-proof grille which allows ventilation for the valves. Through the grille you can glimpse the Celestion 8-inch speaker and sitting in a recess in the grille with its own retaining strap is the mains lead. The mains lead is hard-wired so you can't lose it. The only other feature on the back is an output for an extension cabinet. This mutes the onboard speaker when engaged.
Sound of the Laney Cub 8 Valve Amp
The Laney Cub actually operates with two valves, there's an ECC83 at pre-amp stage and a 6V6GT at the output stage. The valves operate in single-ended, class A mode. This produces classic valve tone from the days when valve-powered radios bequeathed their technology to fledgling guitar amps. With medium-output pickups played into the Hi input, the Laney delivers a velvety warm overdrive with classic rock undertones. Use higher-powered pickups and the overdrive gets thicker and warmer but never muddy or turgid. Flip to the Lo input and enjoy a bright and responsive clean sound with a pleasing edge of overdrive at the upper reaches of the volume control.
Overall Impressions of the Laney Cub 8 Valve Amp
This amp is loud enough for rehearsal and informal jamming but you'd need to feed it into an extension cab for higher volumes. The Cub is after all designed to produce tone rather than volume. This is a very clever move by Laney as it recognises the physical limitations of of smaller speakers. So working within the comfort zone of the speaker guarantees the best delivery of tone. All in all the Laney is a superb little amp that does what it says on the tin. It represents truly portable tone, and it's important to remember that it's authentic tone, not modelled.
